Default Location of radiator fan control module.

Did some searching and could not find an exact answer. Is the radiator fan control module part of the fan motor assembly, or is it located elsewhere on the fan shroud or somewhere else? Hard to see down there without taking stuff off. I am getting OBDll code P0483 "Cooling fan rationality check malfunction." Engine temp is normal. Am I right to interpret this as a fan control module failure or fan motor problem? Fan does come on low speed but I lose AC cooling when idling or crawling along and as soon as I get moving the AC cools right down normally. So maybe not enough air flow through the radiator at idle? Fan does not seem to run at high speed.
Or is there something else in your experience that is the problem?
Thanks, John

Hi John, we're neighbors!

Yes, the cooling fan control module is built into the fan/motor/shroud/cowl assembly. Here's a snip from the Electrical Guide that gives the location:

I recently had to replace the fan assembly in an '04 and it's not too difficult. You do need to remove the air intake pipe, coolant reservoir, and maybe some other obstructions. The code stored in this particular car's ECM was P0480: Radiator cooling fan module drive circuit malfunciton/fault.

To test the fan module and motor, I removed the radiator undertray and tested the wiring at the fan harness. The fan module was receiving correct B+ voltage from the Front Power Distribution Fuse Box, correct Engine Management Switched power, a plausible PWM control signal, and the ground had low resistance to the chassis, but the fan motor would not run. Replacing the fan assembly resolved the issue. Given your issue, you might want to check all of those voltages and resistances, and also that the PWM signal varies when the fan speed is changed on the climate control panel, just to rule out a problem with the panel.

You can view the wiring schematic for the fan control module on pdf page 67 of the Electrical Guide, which you can download at the link below:

Jaguar X350 Electrical Guide 2008

The latest cooling fan assembly part number is C2P16825. The bad news, at least a few months ago, was that I could not find any aftermarket options in stock anywhere, so we had to purchase the assembly from Jaguar Land Rover Nashville (in Brentwood). I think I recall that retail was around $900.00 and even with my modest discount it was over $700.00. If you determine that you need a new fan assembly and can't find any aftermarket options, let me know, and I'll be happy to call to see what my current discounted price may be.

Cheers,

Don

Thank you Don. I had that electrical schematic but it is not clear where the fan control module was located. I'll remove the under tray and take a look as you suggest later today.
The fan does run, just not at the high speed.
Where are you? Brentwood, Franklin, Nashville? I'm in Williamson County between Franklin and Leipers Fork.
Thanks for your help. I'll let you know how I make out.

Hi John,

I drive the roads around Leiper's Fork all the time. Lots of great driving therapy in that part of our beautiful county.

I think I recall that the fan harness runs over toward the driver's side. Once you drop the radiator undertray you'll find the connector and you should be able to match up the wire colors to the schematic, but don't be surprised if there are some differences. You may have to do a little testing to figure out which wire is which. If your meter can read PWM duty cycle that will help, otherwise you can get an approximate PWM reading by setting your meter to a low AC voltage range.

Cheers,

Don

AFIK the control module is in the centre of the fan

There are 9 indices specifiying DTC P0483 with very different causes. It is recommended to check the vehicle with original OBD equipment (SDD) to receive the complete DTC.

The fan is probably balanced on the motor at the factory (those little weights that are added to some blades), so there's no guarantee you could pull your fan off of your current motor, then press it onto a salvaged motor and have it run smoothly. But given the cost of a new fan assembly from Jaguar, if you could find a good used motor it might be worth a try.

Thanks for that tip, meirion1!

Cheers,

Don

Are the S-type 4.2L and XF 4.2L radiator fan motors the same as the one in my car, a 2008 XJ8 4.2L? Looking at trying to get a used part. There seem to be more S-type parts than XJ listed. On www.car-parts.com they show S-type and XF fan motors as the same part for the XJ. Is this true?
Thanks for all your help.

The part number for the X350/X358 fan assembly from VIN G00442 to H32732 is C2P16825, and the same part number is correct for the S-Type 4.2L models from VIN M45255 onward.

The fan assembly for the S-Type up to VIN M45254 is XR82853 and is a different design. I do not believe it will fit your car.

The fan assembly for the XF is the same C2P16825 for the 2009 normally-aspirated cars only. The supercharged cars have a different fan. From VIN R30685 (2010) the N/A fan was changed to C2Z13765, and I do not know if that part will fit your car.

Note that Jaguar does not sell the motor/control module separately and the above part numbers are for the complete fan/motor/control module/shroud assembly.

Good places to check part numbers for various models are parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com and jaguarparts.com .

Cheers,

Don
