Default Low coolant light question

Hi I am a newbie and have a question about my 1999 xj8. I read the forums all the time and can't tell you how mant times you have all helped me.

I read the post about the coolant level testing and repair, I do believe that may be an issue. But I have other symptoms so I wanted your opinion.
I have the low coolant that comes on. Sometimes it stays on a lot sometimes it just flashes off and goes out. The coolant in the resivor is fine. It doesn't appear to be leaking from the radiator at all. The temp light is where it has always been. I have noticed in the last few days now that sometimes if I get in the car turn on the heat (I am in Minnesota) the car blows cold air. Not freezing, but not heat. If I let car sit, like "warm it up" before leaving there is heat. Car is roasting hot.
I am a little stumped. I was thinking thermostat maybe. Now last night on my way home from work a restricted performance light came on with the low coolant light at 70 miles per hour. I freaked, slowed down to about 60 and both lights shut off.

Just wondering if anyone has thoughts. I am not a mechanic by any means, but I know about cars... And can do minor repairs myself. I get all maintenance done, oil changed, and have every receipt since the car was new. Bought it from the original owners son. A girl that loves her jag. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Traci
