Question Mobile 1 Oil Filter

All,

Does anyone have any experience with using a Mobile 1 Oil filter on their X350?

I got a quote from my local Jag specialist (independent shop) and he wants $155 to do an oil change. He was going to use AMSOil and a genuine Jag Filter. I'd rather do it myself at that price.

I was going to use Mobile 1 High Milage synthetic oil and the Mobile 1 oil filter. I checked the Mobile 1 website and it shows that part # M1-213 is the correct filter for my 2004 Jag XJR.

Comments? Suggestions?

Thanks

OMG, you could do it yourself in 15 minutes for free as you say. Go do it.
With reference to the mobile 1 filter, if it fits there would be no reason not to use it and I use Mobile 1 synthetic high mileage oil all the time with a cheapo WIX oil filter.

Hi Mr. White,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!

The Mobil 1 oil and filter should be just fine. If you buy the oil at Walmart in 5 litre jugs you'll save a lot of money.

Like trosty I mostly use Wix filters because they're very good quality and stocked at our local O'Reilly Auto Parts. The original Jaguar filters appear to be made by Mann (a German company that has made OE filters for Jaguar for years).

The Wix part number is 51228
The Mann number is W 713/29
The latest Jaguar number is C2C41611 (a shorter style filter that also fits the XK and S-Type)

For our '04 XJR the correct oil weight is 5W-30.

Since we're a friendly group, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum and post an introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jag and give you a proper welcome!

Cheers,

Don

No need for any fancy 'boutique' oils. Jaguar does not specify the usage of synthetic oil for your car at all, standard 'dino' oil will be just fine.

The Mobil filter will work just fine.

I use Castrol Edge and Motorcraft filters. The Lincoln LS filters fit our cars. As mentioned, conventional oil is just fine too.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I was planning on buying the 5 quart bottles that they have at Walmart for about $26. That's a cheaper way than getting the 6 bottle cases at Costco. I figured that I could buy wheel ramps, an oil drain pan, the oil, and filter all for less than the price of the commercial oil change.

This site really is an amazing resource for Jag owners. Iv'e been lurking here for some time and found that it really helped my when looking for which Jag to buy.

I'll post an introduction soon.

Thanks again.

Buying the stuff yourself, doing the job yourself on those ramps makes you feel all good and fluffy inside.

Changing ones oil and filter, is the first step to doing many jobs on your car, ultimately leading to the complete heater core change on your own.

I like vacuuming the oil out the dipstick. I use 0w-40 Castrol in mine. It is a XJR also. It is not critical.
Mine had a Jaguar branded filter, Wix, Denso, Mobil 1 are all fine. I stocked up on oil, they had the five quart jugs of Castrol for 22 dollars a month ago at Walmart. Will not be buying any oil for a few years.
I change all our cars at 5,000 mile intervals. This is all with full synthetics. Just peace of mind.

I paid $22.97 last week at our Walmart for the 5 litre jugs of Castrol Edge 5W-30, so they must still have that pricing. For some strange reason, O'Reilly normally has the same jugs at about $27-28, but when I checked they had increased the price to $37, so that prompted the trip to Walmart.

By the way, for those of you who like to know this stuff, some if not all of the Mobil 1 filters are made by Champion Laboratories:

http://www.champlabs.com/content/mob...mited-warranty

According to their website, they also manufacture filters for STP, Royal Purple, VW, Mopar, Deutsch, and others, so they're OE quality filters:

Don

I bought 5 jugs about two weeks ago. $22 is a great deal and I couldn't pass it up. I would have went with 0w40, but they didn't have many jugs in stock.

Well, I did my own oil change this morning. I haven't done this in probably 10 years. I used to do all my own services, but oil changes got so cheap that it wasn't worth the hassle. However, the $155 quote I got for the oil change on the Jag made me reconsider that position.

I bought some wheel ramps and chocks from Harbor Freight, Mobil 1 oil from Walmart, and a filter from Amazon. The wheel ramps weren't high enough for my liking, so I will probably add a few pieces of 2x10 under them to gain another 3" in height.

Removing and replacing the ground shield definitely took longer than draining the oil and changing the filter.

I must say, I kind of had fun doing this.

Default Oil and filter info

Some info on synthetic oil- it is no longer synthetic as in a synthetic base stock. Otherwise it would cost much more. It was at first, and cost 5x regular oil. Now they "re-refine" it so it flows like synthetic, and they are allowed to call it synthetic. They refine out the larger oil molecules so they are more the same size so it flows better when cold like true synthetic. Otherwise it is conventional oil. Source- oils expert at Caterpillar where I retired from.

Regarding oil filters, Mobil 1 filters are by far the best. They may be made by Champion but it is Mobil design, much better. The media is 3 dimensional meaning it is thicker with fiberglass so it holds more, filters much better (smaller particles) and lasts longer (more resistant to plugging). Purolator Pure One however is similar (also branded as Motorcraft). The cheap ones are paper, 2 dimensional, plug easier, and don't filter as well. Attached is an analysis of different filters somebody did, cutting them open. The cheap ones have poor bypass valves, cheap internals, etc. I would not use them. Fram is probably the worst. AC Delco, Wix, Purolator are the best of low cost filters. The attachment has photos, detailed descriptions and how to identify the different core brands.
The website link is probably more up to date and has more info. Oil Filters Revealed - MiniMopar Resources
Probably more than you want to know!

Hi rcannon,

This thread has had no activity since 2015.

To quote the documents you posted, "These pages are NOT to be taken as gospel. The primary motivation behind this study was to provide information about what oil filter brands are made by which manufacturers. The secondary motivation was to uncover some of the obvious internal construction issues of these manufacturers. This "study" is not a "test"."

So if I understand correctly, these documents do not purport to tell us which filters are "best." Is that your understanding?

There are lots of videos on YouTube in which oil filters are cut apart and evaluated and some particularly interesting videos in which filters are tested dynamically. It is definitely worth educating ourselves as to which brands of filters tend to perform poorly and which tend to perform better.

To reduce the number of decisions I have to make, I try to learn the companies that make the OE filters for each automaker and stick with those brands as much as possible. If Jaguar engineers (and Porsche, BMW and Mercedes-Benz engineers) believe that Mann and Mahle filters perform well, then who am I to disagree?

But I do agree that Mobil 1 and Wix are quality filters and have no problem using them myself if I can't get an OEM filter. As I mentioned several years ago in an earlier post in this thread, some or all Mobil 1 filters are made by Champion Laboratories. Also, Wix is owned by Mann+Hummel.

There is an interesting article on the history of synthetic oil at the link below. I have no idea whether or not it is accurate, but it may be worth a read to those interested in these topics:

The History of Synthetic Oil (and AMSOIL)

Cheers,

Don

Default Filter report is 15 years old

A lot can happen in the oil filter supply chain. Even for an auto branded filter.
We have a Subaru, it has had three brands in maybe five years of oil filters supplied by US dealers. Roki (Japan OEM), Fram (Tough Guard), and now AC Delco. All three branded Subaru.
Country of manufacture, availability, and cost point all play into manufacturer selection.
I like Champion filters. They may be the best. But make a lot filters are differing price points.
Got several Luber Finer. Think they are made by Champion. Seem to be be fine filters.
Air filter is more critical in reducing engine wear than oil filter. Keeps the abrasives out of engine. No one gets wound up about them like they do about oil filters.
