Angry No rear parking control "beeps"

I have just purchased a white, 2004, XJ8 Van Dan Plas and I Love it!!

It is going in next week to have the coolant hoses replaced and a new coolant reservoir fitted.

However, I noticed today in the car park that when I was reversing the car I did not get the "Beep, Beep" that I get on my XK8. Having looked in the handbook it says that the rear parking control is on all the while.

Therefore is it likely that I have a fuse problem??
If so does anyone know which fuse I need to check and where the fuses are?

If it is not a fuse problem can anyone suggest where I might start looking?

Many thanks, David

Do you have the button to turn it off/on on the overhead console? Perhaps it's just turned off.

I do not have a button on the overhead console to switch the system on/off (like it shows in the handbook) I just have the one button for the rear blind.

I also thought that there should be a button on the overhead console am I missing something here??

If you only have the rear "park assist" (aka backup obstacle warning) then you do not have a button. When the system works correctly, when you back up towards an obstacle, it starts to beep, beeping faster and faster the closer you get to the obstacle. If the system is malfunctioning, then when you put the car in reverse after starting it, it will emit one long beep, and not do anything if you back towards an obstacle.

The overhead console button is there only if you have FORWARD collision avoidance as well.

Fuses are listed in the owners manual.

You can download an electronic copy from the sticky on this forum.

Very useful to have it on your desktop.

F32 comes to mind?

Also, if you're not hearing that solid beep which indicates a failed sensor, and it's not the fuse, the speaker may be the culprit.

The parking module is located on the side of the spare wheel well and the speaker

is located under the rear parking shelf but can be tested from wiring at the rear

lights. Elect Guide also in sticky.

You need to read the DTCs from the module and stop guessing.

The Reverse Parking Aid module is on the the network and stores all the faults if present.
We can all type about 'what-if' but the module has the info stored!!!!!!!!!!

Many thanks Motorcarman.
I checked the 5amp fuse F32 and it was good.
I will now connect my OBD reader and see what it says.

OK, the OBD outlet on my XK8 is under the dash on the drivers side.
Where is it located on the XJ8, I have looked on both sides under the dash and cannot see it. I will check out the manual.

Motorcarman, please bear with me, you are dealing with a 73 yr old who hates computers!!
I have found the page in the manual with all the DTC's listed ie B1299 are you saying that these errors will come up on my OBD reader or do I need a different type of electronic reader?

All generic scanners can read P codes (Powertrain).
You will need to read C codes (Chassis).

There are specific diagnostic computers for this. You need to find someone that has the correct reader.

I have WDS and IDS for Jaguar but there are things like AutoEnginuity, AutoLogic etc.

In the pic it is where your right knee is usually positioned where you see that "tab" of trim sticking down it is to the right and behind the trim.

Also there is a way of getting DTCs by holding in the button of the indicator stalk while you turn the ignition to on without starting the car.

You will see any DTCs in the message area on the dash.

The following was posted by Thermo a while back:

The procedure:

1) Enter the car and leave your foot off of the brake
2) Depress the TRIP button and hold it for a minimum of 3 seconds before doing anything else
3) With the TRIP button still depressed, momentarily depress the START/STOP button
4) With the TRIP button still depressed, let the car start up the electronics until you reach the screen in the right most part of the cluster that says "Press the OK button" at the top
5) Release the TRIP button, you should now see the right most part of the cluster change to say "Press TRIP button to enter Engineering Test Mode"
6) Press the TRIP button one more time to enter Engineering Test Mode

Once in the ETM, you press the TRIP button to scroll forward through the various screens. Most of it is jiberish at the moment. where I do see it being helpful is near the end of all the screens, it does give a status of all the computers in the car. So, if you have a problem where you are stuck between having a sensor that is bad or a computer that is bad, this may be helpful in distinguishing between the two.

To exit this mode, simply turn off the car.

"With the TRIP button still depressed, momentarily depress the START/STOP button"
Do you mean, turn the ignition key to the first position? Otherwise, which start/stop button?

It is meant to be the key turned to the II position. Engine not running.

Question

Thank you all for the information.

1. I did find where to connect the OBD autoscanner - just by my right knee! (I am using an Actron model #CP9175 autoscanner)

2. When on "Read Codes" P1111 1of1 Pending came up

3. I/M Monitor all of the systems and sensors registered "OK"

4. Freeze Frame Data - No freeze frame store- freeze frame event not detected

5. I tried using the end of the stalk but could not get to the DTC codes for some reason?

I appreciate all the help, now I will get my indy mechanic to check to see what he can come up with.

Getting into Engineering Test Mode is hit and miss for me.

Sometimes it works sometimes not.

I recently replaced a front parking sensor after experiencing the long 3 second beep.

My JLR SDD diagnostic software did not show any faults although I might not have read it properly.

I originally thought it was the control box but soon discovered it was not.

I picked up a set of 4 front sensors, used, on Ebay and only needed one. The set of 4 used was less than the price of 1 new.

It is easier to replace front sensors I think although some have done the rear thru the tail light "hole" by feel.

Jackra_1: I would be interested in how you knew which one of the 4 sensors was bad??
Also, do I assume that if 1 of the 4 sensors is bad then I will get the 3 second beep?

I forget exactly what I did now. I had the complete front bumper off and I believe I replaced one at a time until the 3 second beep went away.

With front and rear sensors there is 4 channel control unit in the trunk. With just rear there is a 2 channel control box.

I used a 2 channel control box which worked with the rear sensors so I knew it must be something to do with the front sensors. I also knew that there was nothing wrong with my 4 channel control box.

That I knew because I bought a used good one on Ebay for $20.

So after throwing parts at the problem I finally solved the problem.

People say you can hear clicking from a working sensor however I could not hear any clicking from my front sensors maybe because if one goes out they all cease to operate?
