Overheating after replacing hoses. Thermostat stuck? What else could it be?

Default Overheating after replacing hose. Thermostat stuck? What else could it be?

Hey everyone,

Just replaced upper radiator hose after it failed on the freeway. New hose on and now car is overheating immediately. Once operating temperature reached, temps just keep climbing.

Could it be anything else besides thermostat somehow getting stuck as a result of my hose ripping?

When I filled it up with coolant after hose replaced I had the heater turned on high and I kept the top off for a bit to hopefully get any air out of system. Would air trapped in system even cause overheating like this?

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

just replaced hoses on mine had similar issues left cap off and kept squeezing upper hose and heater hoses till heater started blowing hot again finally must have burped all air out. next morning had to top off coolant no problems since.im sure theres a better way but this worked on mine.

You mentioned the "heater blowing hot again", are you referring to the heater air vents in the cabin of the car? I did notice that the heater was not blowing hot air in the cabin of the car while I sat there. Is it safe to assume that hot air not coming out of the air con vents with the heater on high points to air trapped in the system?

I'm going to try what you did, squeeze the upper hose and heater hoses. Should I be seeing big air bubbles come out of the coolant reservoir once the car gets to operating temperature? I haven't ever burped a coolant system but I have read that the heater should be turned on it's hottest temperature with fan on high and have the cap off the coolant reservoir. I also heard it is good to park on an angle with the radiator at a higher point than the engine, I have a rather steep driveway so I'm going to try and park on a slope to see if that helps the air get out of system.

I've never used the heater in this jag yet as I'm in Hawaii. I actually don't even know if the AC button needs to be pressed on to get the heater to work.... does anyone know this? I'm assuming yes otherwise it will just blow room temp air with AC off, no hot/cold air.

Just raise the front of the car (ramps are perfect) so the reservoir is the highest point.
Open the cap but don't run the engine
Fill the reservoir
Turn on the the ign and heater and leave it for 5 mins
The coolant will circulate will circulate using the aux pump
Replace the cap and let the engine idle up to temp
Take the car of the ramps and allow it to cool topup the coolant as needed

I am attaching the section from the Workshop Manual that gives the procedure for draining, refilling and bleeding the cooling system. Removing the bleed screw while filling and following the rest of the procedure did the trick for me, and I didn't even have to raise the front of the vehicle.

Just to clarify, that is the non s/c procedure
For s/c the procedure adds removal of the manifold plug
Raising of the front eliminates removal of either plug
The reservoir bleed screw is also a source of leaks so I prefer to keep it closed

I posted the non-S/C procedure earlier since hawaiianjag's car is non-S/C, but for those with S/C cars I'm attaching the Workshop Manual procedure here.

I believe the most common cause of a leaking bleed screw is overtightening of the plastic screw. Just get it "snug" and all should be well. I've never had a leak on either our X350 or our BMW, both of which have nearly identical reservoir bleed screws.

Thanks a lot guys! Much appreciated. It turns out that I did not get all the air out of the system and she is running nice and cool now. I noticed another hose with a crease in it so I am going to flush the radiator after I replace that hose and should be good to go. Much appreciated for all the help, you guys are legendary. I went through the Supercharger procedure for my 2004 XJR. Heater still blows cold even with motor up to normal operating temperature, but the expansion tank is not up to full pressure or temp yet. I suspect I need to take the car for a spin, but there's snow on the ground here in NH so I plan to wait a day.

Any other thoughts?
