Ok. Had a P0171 Lean Bank 1 Condition. Thanks to the forum members for all the knowledge acquired here. I am posting my experience in the hope that it may help someone else deal with P0171.

First option was to replace the O Rings on the PCV valve and associated hose. This area was scrutinized as these areas seemed to hiss. Anyway O Rings did not fix, so replaced PCV. Here are some pics of this process.

Next up was a MAF cleaning.

This did not change my LTFTs which were around 19, but now I know, the MAF is clean.

On to the next step...

Fuel filter replacement up next. This was straight forward, thanks to the advice in de-pressurizing the system so as to not 'wear' a bunch of gas from the filter exchange process.

Anyway, here are a few pics of the event.

Again, this did not resolve the reoccurring code, but at least the fuel filter is renewed at 83,000 miles...

So, on to the 02 sensors... This was interesting. Disconnected electronic connectors and 'poured' a bit of water out of the upstream connector.

Sprayed this with some water dissapater and thought that I had the code taken care of.

No luck, so onward.

So, in the meantime I ordered an elm327 bluetooth obd2 device online. An installed the Torque app on android tablet. This way, I could view real time data and did not have to borrow code reader from coworker.

Here's a shot of LTFTs in action...note this shows post-repair LTFTS reading 14.8.

So, took this in for some professional help, who hooked it up to the smoke machine and Voila!, a thin, 'birthday candle width' of smoke rising from the rear (left) passenger side of the engine bay. Apparently, a plastic 'hose joiner' had cracked.

Here is a pic of it in two parts as it snapped fully during removal. And NAPA had the replacement...

Since this time, have done four - 150 mile trips and no code.

Have been having trouble with the portable app lately, so have not been posting. Deleted and reinstalled and all appears well...

Also, after each maintenance described above, I did clear the code and reset ECM using the battery terminal ground process.

Thanks again, hoping this helps the next driver with a P0171...

Thanks for the step by step. Do you know what hose it was with the bad "T"?

Very nice step by step description! I believe the fuel filter connections utilize two o-rings (one on each side). Did you re-use the old ones or did you fit new ones? I do not think aftermarket fuel filters of the canister type come with the requisite o-rings....

Was that the only code you were getting and did you have a steady check engine light and restricted performance on and off

Would start and have yellow (iirc) and restricted performance on display. After a period of time (5 min) Engine light would be lit and restricted perfect text displayed message would go away.

Yes, that was the only code found with scanner.

Prior to repair, LTFTs bank 1 was around 19. Last check 14.

I get that code occasionally. Goes away on it's own. Going to set aside some time next week to start troubleshooting. Thanks for the great info.

Long term fuel trim is the meaning of the acronym. Some great fuel system info on jagforums, search LTFTs and or stft. Good reading...

Thanks

14 is still high. I'd want nearer 0, maybe within 5. I'd be worried 14 was allowing a lesser fault to persist, possibly doing damage.

Both banks?

Does it drop at 2500-ish rpm (hot engine, parked)?
