Hi all

On my 2004 XJ8 Vanden Plass, every time I shift into referse I get the solid deafening alarm as if I am super close to an obstacle when there is none. I put my ear close to the four sensors in the rear bumper and... nothing

A few questions

1. I see these sensors offered on eBay. Are them truth-worthy?
2. I look under the car and don't see a way of replacing these short of removing the gas tank. Do I get this right?
3. In the meantime, how I disable the whole thing?

Ebay sensors should be fine. I bought mine on Ebay.

Some have taken the rear bumper off to access the sensors.

I have a button in my overhead console that I believe can turn mine off.

 

So, *none* of the four are ticking when you listen closely? That makes me think it's not a sensor issue. Also, the eBay sensors you linked to aren't for an X350.

 

There is a control module in the trunk for all sensors. If the front sensors are working then it is unlikely to be the issue.

It is rare for it to crap out but not impossible especially if it gets wet for some reason where the terminals corrode.

Also a possibility is the harness behind the bumper for the sensors especially the main connector.

 

Thank you all for your input. What about my question #3? How do I disable the darn thing? That unfriendly sound every time I shift to reverse drives me nuts.

 

Not sure how to disable it but I would think that if you find the module and disconnect it that should shut it up. I couldn't hear any of them ticking at first, you have to listen very closely.
I replaced 2 of mine last week with Ebay items and so far so good.
The bumper wasn't too bad to take off although I had to grind off the 2 bolt heads at the bottom front of the bumper just behind the wheel arch because they were seized. No problem to replace the captive nut that they screw into, once you have the bumper off all will be revealed. I took the side carpets out of the boot and the plastic cover at the rear to access 4 bolts that keep the bumper on. There are a couple of plastic fittings at the rear of the wheelarches which the manual tells you to remove but I'm not sure why as they don't seem to fasten to the bumper??
The top edge of the bumper sides are kept in by push on clips and you have to give a good tug from the bottom and top to release them. I was petrified that the bumper would break but it was ok. I greased everything with silicone grease and copper slip where metal we involved to make it easy to put back and no doubt it'll have to come off again sometime.
All snowed in here. Glad I've got an old Range Rover, I wouldn't trust the Jag to the end of the drive in this weather. Hopefully better where you are.

To disable it the parking sensors just press the button on the overhead console.

 

As I said in an earlier post you should have a button in the overhead console.

 

MY04 front park assist sensors were an option. If you only have rear sensors, there will not be a button on the overhead consul to silence the speaker which is located on the (rear) parcel shelf. If you prefer not disconnect the park assist control module (in the trunk near the spare) you could disconnect the speaker (covering the speaker wires as there is obviously a signal there when you shift in reverse) but this required back seat and parcel shelf removal.

 

harlock; I took a quick look in the DTC Summaries (available elsewhere on the forum) and It looks like Park Assist control module (PAM) fault codes are body "B" codes (1299, 1342, 2207, 2373, etc) and sensor faults are chassis "C" codes. If you can read these Jaguar specific codes or have someone read them for you, you could zero in on sensors vs. control module. Used replacement control modules are not that expensive on e-bay.

I have had this problem in the past-solid beeeeeeeeeep , no ticking etc.

Remove fuse to disable temporarily ?F32 in the boot. Check in owners manual.

Drop bumper, ign. pos 2, reverse selected.

You will need to replace two sensors until beep stops

 

As to number 3, you would need the OEM software (SDD) or Jag mechanic to disable it permanently.

 

Mine has the button in the roof, and the solid beep on selecting reverse/drive but it stops after a second or 2, I can't remember the DTC code I got, but it points to the left front centre sensor, just not had a chance to fix it yet.

 

Same happened to me and I replaced the module in the trunk thinking that was the issue, I had no codes, and it was not.

So replaced front sensors one by one until I found the sensor that was not working.

When I listened at each front sensor for clicking initially I could not hear any of them clicking.

Someone on this forum purchased the remaining sensors I bought on Ebay where I bought 4 that were being sold and they were black like my car.

Pulling the sensors out requires that they be twisted before pulling. If you try pulling out forcibly without twisting you will damage the surround of the sensor.
