Default reset transmission?

Hi all,

When I was researching the XJ8L's, which I ultimately purchased - an '05 with 41K miles - one of the 'tips' I read from other owners is that I should take it and have the transmission reset to default, to allow it to 'learn' my driving style.

My questions are a) is this true/worth the effort? b) is this something that can be done via access to the 'hidden' diag controls in the touch screen? c) am I likely to bugger something up by not leaving well-enough alone?

Interested in your thoughts/experiences.

Hi ayavner,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is built-in to the transmission valve body in a combined unit called the Mechatronik or Mechatronic. Over time, it will adapt to your driving style regardless of its previous adaptations, and who's to say your driving style is that much different from the previous owner's? So unless there is something about the transmission performance that you don't care for, my recommendation would be to not do a reset. Leave well enough alone and let it adapt naturally as it is designed to do.

I'll be interested in the opinions of other members.

Cheers,

Don

If you've the ZF 6HP26 (as my STR has) it needs a jag-dealer type tool. Unless you don't like something it's now doing I'd just drive and be happy.

I didn't reset mine and it's been fine for 6+ years.

As above, if nothing is broken don't fix it !
On my previous X350 I found the gear change was not as smooth as I felt it should be, the dealer did the Gearbox reflash and for the next 6 years it was perfect, right up until I traded it.
The dealer did say at the time that I should drive it normally and not to use sport mode for 500 miles.
I think, from memory, it was about £100 or so.
Well worth it I would say.
