Default SRS control module removal 06 XJ8

Here is the RCM removed and ready for sending to the vendor for resetting. The flash code read "memory full" so the vendor considers this positive news that since the RCM is returning a "memory full" status as opposed to some generic RCM unreadable condition.

And the front front view of the driver airbag with bag itself cut away.

This is the backside of the driver airbag where the clock spring cabling attaches. Apparently it's common for the terminators to melt when the cylinder ignites, however the retainer clips ( as depicted here ) are intact.

I still have a question: where is the front impact sensor and is there a way to diagnose whether it's still functions?

Thanks, Bob

I need to remove the SRS control module for reprogramming after front airbag deployment. Where is the airbag control module located on 2006 XJ8-Base?

According to the attached, the Restraints Control Module is by the transmission tunnel, under the centre console.

The workshop manual says

"The RCM is mounted on the top of the drive shaft tunnel below the instrument panel console. "

that's good info, at least I know to look for two connectors above the tranny tunnel & under the center console...
RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE CR86 24-WAY / BLACK & SR87 40-WAY / BLACK

Question is: how much of the center console needs to torn apart in order to remove and replace the RCM? Any ideas?
Thanks, Bob

I got past step 1 ( R trans selector sourround) & 2 ( R floor console front bolts ). however Step 3 ( R console Register) I cannot find the Register, what is it exactly? The pdf suggests to "refer to Register" but that is absent from this pdf. Furthermore Re: step 5 " remove rear floor register" I don't see that either on my 06 xj8-base. I do have rear climate control which I am assuming is considered "auxiliary Climate control" in the title of this pdf , but maybe that's not the same hting.

I don't think you can reprogramme the module after it is removed. You can diagnose with it in place or replace and reconfigure.

Here is a diagnostic TSB for you.

I am planning to remove the SRS module and sending it to Ascunce Enterprises, Inc
dba.AirbagCenter in Miami Lakes Florida. They will surgically connect to the module CMOS storage and reset only the crash codes, preserving all other vehicle information thereby keeping me from having to go to the dealer for additional service. I am purchasing a factory replacement driver airbag from them also. I compared their service to MYAIRBAGS located in Lawrenceville Georgia where they reprogram the SRS module and guarantee their work for half the cost, however their service essentially wipes all memory of the module.

If you have separate temperature controls and LCD display in the back you have the full, 4 zone (auxiliary), air-con. If you just have vents, you don't.

This is a base model and according to the sticker, NAV & bluetooth is the optioned feature and there is no LCD in the back, so this unit does not have "auxillary Climate Control". Besides Steps 1 & 2 being common, I suspect there is another publication that provides specific steps for the unit does not does have "auxillary Climate Control". While still trying to figure out out how to remove RCM, I decided to look at removing the driver airbag.

I found and removed the three TORX-T20 fasteners on the backside of the streeing wheel cover, however it's the two main fasteners that hold the driver airbag unit in place that have me mystified. I can get a TORX bit to fit those fasteners and since the airbag is deployed, I can see the tapered end at the tip of the fastener and can get a vice grip on that tapered tip to loosen ( mirrored lefty loosely affect ) it most of the way out, however I cannot remove the fastener all the way. What type of head is on this fastener? It's too deeply set into the wheel trim so even a small mirror doesn't get a positive ID on fastener type. Any ideas?

Update: I used a hex key and once removed I found they were TORX-T35, however my TORX set was too too short and stubby to reach the fastener head.

my apologies for cluttering this discussion thread with multiple topics. Since I could not get the driver airbag removed, I reattached the negative post of battery and checked the flash codes on the airbag icon on the dash. It flashes five sets of 13 before the light remains on. According to the docs:
13 B1231 Crash Data Memory Full
Clear Fault Code and Cycle
Ignition, If DTC can't be
cleared replace the RCM

I suspect I'll need to replace the rear seatbelt pretensioners since they fire along with the driver airbag before having the module CMOS memory crash codes reset.
Not sure of the significance of the five pairs of 13 flash codes... does the five pairs of codes indicate anything specific?

I have the module removed, and driver airbag removed. Getting ready to order new driver airbag and sending the module in for clearing the crash codes.
Besides having the seatbelt pretensioners rebuilt before reassembling, what other considerations are there to be aware of before I move forward with this order? The clock spring terminals and wire are intact, so I suspect the clockspring is OK.
Any other considerations?

What about the crash sensor itself? How or what can I check for that?
Thanks, Bob
