Thoughts on Dex Cool
I am planning on doing a coolant service when the weather clears and wanted to get the opinion others may have regarding Dex Cool. It is also used in my 750 Vulcan (Kawasaki) motorcycle. On that forum the attitude regarding Dex Cool is get rid of it ASAP in order to prevent pending doom. Personally I have no problem with it, nor have I ever had a problem, although I am aware there are issues. I have already acquired the necessary fluids, Dex Cool and at least 8 gallons of distilled water so I really just would like the opinion of others on this subject. Thanks
picture the average gm guy. some aren’t the brightest people in the world and there are lots of them on the internet
those 3100s and 3400s had garbage intake gaskets and dexcool ate them up. the end
if you’re scared just use the ford yellow it replaces the orange they used for a long time

Being completely and carefully flushed, DexCool should be just fine.... so long as you don't mix with other types of coolant for top-offs, etc.
I've had multiple Saabs that ran DexCool, with no issues between them, and over a half-million miles of driving. Flip side: On my XJ8, previous owners/services used G-05, so I've stuck with it there.

Nothing wrong with DexCool at all. I have been driving cars with the Buick 3.8 Supercharged engine for the better part of 15+ years and well over 500k miles and not a single issues related to coolant. A couple of those cars went over 300k without issue. As @xalty said the only issues were with the crappy Chevy motors and it wasnt because of the coolant. That, or people that mixed green with the DexCool, then you'll have an issue. I'm actually happy the Jag uses Dex, have gallons of the stuff lying around.
Have used Dex-Cool in a Bonneville, Tahoe, z28 and Corvette without issue. Lucky for 87LC2 and I, we are not the average GM owner. However, I believe Rancheroguy was speaking of complaints voiced on the Kawasaki forum and not the GM forum. And no, I don't want to picture the average Kawasaki owner either. Just saying
I have no idea why anyone would want to switch over completely from perfectly serviceable coolant to Dex-Cool. I don't accept any "major" advantages it has, among them a claimed longer life, and to switch, you have to absolutely and completely remove every last trace of existing coolant, which I don't think can be done.
We had a Chevy as one of our business cars at work, and someone, noticing the coolant being low, topped it off with the green stuff that was then ever-present. OEM was Dex-Cool, and the coolant turned into a clumpy paste that clogged several hoses and resulted in the car overheating. It was probably less than pint of green stuff that went in. My point is, you can't leave any of your old coolant if it's not one of those newer formulas that's compatible. I challenge you to be able to prove you did that...

Really? I always thought DexCool was used in the X350. Glad you mentioned this before I used any. So what do you use in an x350, dealer only?
The coolant should be OAT and it's red/pink. No need to buy from dealers.
BTW in case you don't know (and I did not) there is a drain plug on the engine block.
Obviously it is underneath and it is a large hexagonal bolt head.
Since I did not open mine can anyone else confirm this?

When I bought my car, a previous owner had already changed the coolant from the orange OAT to green (I assume) ethylene glycol. They must have cleaned it out thoroughly, as all the heaters work ok. I have continued with that and have had no problems. After changing the supercharger, I refilled the system with more green coolant concentrate, mixed 50/50 with reverse osmosis filtered water. The use of pure water is an important factor IMHO.
I swapped out the dexcool or whatever orange stuff that was in my car when I got it and changed over to the tried and true, good ol american, old fashioned Prestone green after a good flush.
I’ll never use dexCool again. No way! Not after all it’s done to me. Dexcool killed my family! It cost me my job! It caused my male pattern baldness! It’s ran away with my wife and took my only friend! It wiped out my bank account! it destroyed my life and it gave me warts!
never again. No way
