Default transmission issues

Hello, i have a 2004 vdp with 40,000 miles. during the last 20,000 miles or so the car has gradually gotten more abrupt in shifting in the 1-2 up shift from take off, and the downshifts were very strong (a milder version of the a drum bang in the 5hp24). i changed the fluid, the electric connector sealing ring, the bridge connector, and the sealing tubes in the mechatronics. the bridge connector wasn't cracked, but its rubber felt brittle and not as soft any more. the electric connector sealing ring was a bit wet, and the transmission was down under 1 qt from full. after the fluid change, it seems it is a bit better, but the 1-2 upshift is still a bit rough, and all the other shifts are a bit smoother (almost unnoticeable).

the 1-2 upshift feels like a hesistation, and when you try accelerating at a higher rpm for it to shift (2500-3000rpm) it is faster and doesnt slip, but it is still a bit rough. it is most abrupt/rough when the car is going at 1800rpm and is shifting.

the downshifts overall are much better, but the 1-2 is still felt. when i watch the rpm, it looks like the bang is when the rpm goes from 700-900rpm as i am slowing down and it downshifts.

does this sound like it needs to relearn adaptations? or can i just remove the battery terminals and touch the positive and negative together to clear memory like on the older jags (or will this not clear transmission memory)?

i dont have any abs codes or speed sensor codes, transmission codes, etc.

i also have a p0171/p0174 code which appears to be a vacuum leak but i dont think that would be related.

There are software updates (especially for the 2-1 'lurch') for the transmission software so it's worth going to a ZF transmission specialist and asking for a transmission 'reflash'. I had that done on mine at 76,000 when the fluid & filter were done and it made a very noticable difference, especially to 2-1 shifts. If it hasn't been done since the car was new then it would definitely be worth getting that done IMHO.

Contrary to what a lot of people say, a battery disconnect doesn't reset the transmission adaptations, they survive; it only clears the engine idling and mixture settings (and the windows and the parking brake ...)

I did the same as you and my remaining irritation is the same one - upshift from 1-2 is hard. I have put a couple of thousand miles on the car since the service . I also find that the 1-2 shift is easier when in Sport mode so that what I do. I did ask ZF about it and they suggested changing the solenoid responsible. I will next time I service the transmission at 100,000 miles (just to make sure I got all of the nasty old tranny fluid out). For the record, I have only seen one warning light since the service and I think that was caused by a gearchange exactly as I had to brake hard. Turning ignition off and on cleared it and it hasn't been seen since.

Funny how you changed the fluid and filter at 76,000 but I just called me local Jag dealer to get my 06 XJR done and was told they will not do it because it will cause the trans to fail and it shouldn't be done until 150,000 miles. I then said, ok how about the software update and he again said, no we wont do that either as it will also cause problems and he doesn't want me to have to replace the trans in the future.

Seriously, Jaguar dealership refusing to do the work. Guess I need to just do it myself.

The current advice from ZF, who are the manufacturers of the transmission, is that the fluid and filter should be changed at 50-75,000 miles or at eight years, whichever occurs first. It sounds like the Jag agent just didn't want to be bothered ... or is hoping to pick up supplying and fitting you a new transmission later on ?

Takes a bit of time to warm up the fluid in the trans.
Keeping someone paying attention not to over heat the fluid.
As well as someone burning their arm, putting the fill plug in.
Replacing parts is so much easier, as well as much more profitable.
Spare parts sold at retail prices, with the service dept, is what keeps the dealers in afloat.

I think its more, mines an 06 (13 years old) and they would rather work on newer ones and not be bothered with it and any potential issues in the future. When I owned a high end bodyshop a few years ago we found a certain nationality would always complain about the finished product even if there was nothing wrong as they wanted to get money back. Maybe Jaguar has dealt with those older car customers who come in for an oil change (not many at the $299 price they charge) and then a week later complain the A/C doesn't work and it had to be the Jaguar dealers fault, LOL.
