Default 1996 XJ6 Vanden Plas Stereo

I’m new to these forums and I just picked up a 1996 XJ6 Vanden Plas. I’m looking to rework the entire stereo, as the radio has issues, there’s light damage to all the door speakers, blown tweeters, and a demolished subwoofer.

I was hoping someone else on here can link a thread or give me a baseline to follow. The plan is to add a single din headunit, component door speakers with external crossovers and tweeters, powered by a 4 channel amplifier.

I also would like like to add subwoofers for obvious reasons. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do 2 12’s or 2 15’s, depending on the volume needed. Obviously this will be powered by a mono block amplifier.

My main issue is working around the jaguar wiring and the fitting in the head unit. I have not found anything on aftermarket head unit surrounds, and I know that the wiring harness going to the factory Harmon Kardon amp is wonky. Should I scrap everything and rewrite it all and remove the factory amp? I figure so since I’m adding my own external amps, but what is the easiest way to go about this? I would like to keep factory speaker and tweeter locations, so what sizes can these openings take? Adding adapters and such is not an issue. Also, any recommendations on fitting a head unit in the factory location? Typically a head unit the size of a Pioneer MVH560BT.

Thanks in advance,
Devin

See page 222 for the standard option where the speakerwires come out of the head unit

color code on page 16

See page 225 for the premium option like yours which uses the same head and connector but the speaker cable to the amplifier is the tan round one

Thank you. My only problem is according to other research that connector is only used for power because I have the HK amp. According to some other posts, there is a 5-6 pin wire that plugs in and runs to the amp, and speaker wire comes out the other side of the amp and to the door speakers. Is this true? That’s what I was describing by wonky in the OP.

thanks,
Devin

Lady Penelope, you may wish to update your pin connection diagram for the Alpine AJ9500A/Jaguar X300 radio connectors.
You have question marks for pin 3 & 4
Pin 3 is a Red/Pink wire to the light switch (provides illumination)
Pin 4 is a Red/Light green wire to the Dimmer control override.
Both are shown on the "Dimmer controlled lighting" diagram 10.2 in the electrical diagrams.

Default Radio volume is only issue

I have had my 1997 VDP with 'standard' radio system and CD changer only a few months, and the only radio issue is very low volume. I have to rotate the volume control knob about 3 times full round to get decent volume! There is a lot in the threads about fuses, and poor speakers-- but is this problem most likely the internal amplifier? Any suggestions on how to test? I thought about replacing a speaker to see if that had a significant affect.

Thanks
