Default 96 xj6 project no spark

Hello all, so to start off I bought a 96 jaguar xj6 that had been sitting for 3 years, and has quite a few problems, many caused my neglect. I knew I was getting into a project, but I got it for a steal. I have mechanical knowledge and all the tools I should need. So now that you know all of that the main issue it is having is that it will not start, I have replaced all fluids, air filter and spark plugs, and bought a new battery for it. I had a slow crank issue then realized that the alternator was not spinning on the car, I fixed that problem, but it will still not fire, it has a no spark issue, I have done some research and found that the crankshaft position sensor is a common problem. I was wondering if someone could tell me how to check it, or if there is anything else I should check. Thanks in advance for all the help!

Welcome to the Forum. Make sure you pop over to the new members section, review the forum rules and guidelines, and make an introductory post there. It will get you started down the right path and allow a mod to take note of you and upgrade you to full-status when you've bagged all of the pre-req's.

I guess it is not a failsafe method, but in general, if turns are registering on your rev-counter whilst cranking (should see about 200-250) then it is time to look beyond the ckps (crankshaft position sensor) for the source of your starting woes. Fuel (no port on the rail for checking this) air, spark, and compression.

I wouldn't be surprised if you have jellied fuel in the lines or filter, somewhere. As said earlier, these are a bit dodgy to check for presence of fuel...

Thank you for the reply, I have cracked the fuel line right as it goes into the fuel rail, and it has good pressure, I will have to check about the rpm's tomorow. If it doesn't read anything I will go ahead and spend the 150$ for a new crank position sensor. its going to be a long process to get it back on the road, and I will stay active on the forum

Check with David Boger at everyday XJ and pick up a used CPS. No sense buying new for $$ if you can check it against a known good used one.

Crank position sensor $150. That sounds pricy. Figure out how to test it. The rev counter needle will move during cranking if it's OK. I believe these cars are coil on plug so if one coil does not spark then try another. It's unlikely that all coils are dead. It would be lack of spark signal.

Given the car was sitting for three years, it might be worth questioning whether the fuel is still ok. You said you had cracked a line and had good pressure; was it definitely petrol coming out, as opposed to perhaps watered down petrol?
try spraying some quick start into the air cleaner and seeing whether you get any signs of life. Crank position sensor needs to be eliminated, as described above.
Do you know whether the car was running when it was take off the road?

Thank you for all the replies, I have contacted everyday XJ, and am awaiting a response, I am planing to drain the tank when it warms up as it is currently 34*F. As for the ckps problem I have the battery on the charger now. I am wondering if anyone could tell me what the best way to drain the tank on the car would be? Thanks in advance

I dunno about the best way on this car but *A* way would be to let the fuel system do it for you. Attach a long bit of fuel pipe to where the fuel pipe arrives in the engine bay and put the other end in your jerry can. Turn on the ignition and let the fuel pump do the work.

I dunno if that's right for this car.

Sorry for not mentioning this in my earlier reply, but the lady I purchased the car off of said it ran when she parked it. Wayland, I am not sure if what you said will work, I believe when you put the key in the ignition the fuel pump will run for 5-10 seconds before it shuts off to keep the battery from dying. I'm not sure if this is true as this is my first jaguar, but it works that way with every American and Japanese car I have worked on

You could be right but I always thought it pumped up the pressure and stopped when the pressure switch or float switch said so. If that's the case it would keep going if you piped some off, unless some safety system cut it off.

You can jump the pins in the pump relay to run continuously.

Hello all, it would appear that my ckps is an issue, when I crank over the motor the tachometer does not move at all. Does anyone know if there is a way to check it other than the crank test? And if it still is the problem could someone point me in the direction in Which I could by a ckps for a resonable price? I have tried everyday XJ and received no response. Thanks again for all the help!!!

You can get a sensor on RockAuto.com for around $100. Coventry West in Atlanta is also a good source for Jaguar parts. Probably best to call them, they have many parts not listed on their website.

To drain the tank, remove the trim piece at the back of the trunk, that should expose the tank. There is a small drain plug at the bottom, facing the rear of the car. Make sure you have a catch pan handy, otherwise it will drain into the spare tire well.

Being a fan of closing off a thread for people searching similar issues, and that my 1995 XJR suddenly from one day to the next will not fire due to spark absense (checked with starter fluid, no life) I am curious to know if the CKPS replacement solved your problem?

cheers

I apologize for bringing up a long dead thread, but the crank position sensor has fixed the no spark issue, I have been working on the car off and on for several months, and had it started and running a few times. It started and ran ok for several minutes meaning no odd noises or anything of that sort. It ran ok, but would stall below 1400-1500 rpm leading me to believe the problems were in part low fuel pressure and bad gas, then the fuel line running to the fuel rail sprung a leak causing more issues. I will start a new thread detailing what all I have done to the car soon.
