Default '97 Vanden Plas Fog Light install

Hi all,

I am trying to install driver side fog lamp on a '97 xj-6.
(Got the car with a missing fog lamp). ....there are only two wires sticking out, shown in the attached pictures.
I think I am missing a wiring harness?

Looks like the outer casing has gone missing from the wiring.

If you take the other one out you'll see what i mean.

YOu can avoid that...but it won't bring your connector housing back:

See slides 3-5 of the pdf.

Very useful .ppt, thanks!
I found the attached wiring harness on ebay.
I probably can get it just for the connector?
[I think the connector housing can be pulled away from the harness?]

Depends on the price, have you got a breakers yard nearby that may be cheaper?

If you are going to get a replacement harness why not fit the whole thing? A bit more work but you know it will be right.

You don't want mess the new one up just for a plug

It will be very hard to find a Jag in a US breakers yard, I can try.

Replacing the whole thing is a good idea.
[By the way, the price on ebay is $29 for the harness].

(I would have expected just two ends, maximum three, for one side of the driver side fog light.)

But, I see five ends on these harness ...is it left and right combined?

I see that it goes to a few places including the side marker ...short distances ...I don't think it will be difficult to replace the whole harness ...I will go ahead and order .....thanks!

Tough call, if its from a part-out, rather than from spares-stock, likely same age as yours, so hard to say whether you break less removing the connector and inserting your terminals (from the pics, they appear to be original) or unplug/replug on 5 connectors - those plastics do tend to get brittle after some years. If it were me, I'd probably take my chances with removing the connector housing - I'd fear breaking a connector or three on the car-side if I did a full swap. And if it does serve both sides, you have two shots at it - two connectors and you only need one.

It looks like it does not serve both sides.
I followed the existing one, and it goes to a few places [short distances around the fog light area]. So, for both left and right, you had have two separate harnesses. You are right, there is added risk with working with the other ones ....I will look into removing the connector when the harness arrives ...and keep the rest for spares ...
