Hey i was wondering if anyone had done and/or had any ideas on how to possibly make the boot/trunk open all the way rather than just pop once unlocked.
i have seen these springs which in some cases look easy to install but i can't quite think where would be the point on the hinge and on the car body to attach., as the spring needs to be fully relaxed when boot is open and under stress when boot is closed.
it is possible simple and i am just missing it.
or is it maybe a case of getting some upgraded boot struts?
some with some more power might actually force the boot to open by itself.
maybe install it as marked on this image?
so that it is essentially opposite to the gas strut.
so as the boot closes it gets pulled tight so when you pop the boot it wants to relax and pull the gust strut out

Interesting idea. It would take some experimentation. Once you overcome the weight of that bootlid, the struts will push it fully open. But... you don't want to hyper-extend the hinges and struts as it reaches fully open. It might need a damper at the top of the travel.
That setup would allow the bootlid to be closed without falling and slamming shut too.
New struts help but they just don't have the strength or positioning to overcome the weight of that steel sheet.
my current thought process is a spring to basically give the boot a little push to the point that the struts then take over and do the rest of the work.
will try this option first and then if that doesn't work will look into higher powered struts

I know the X100 XK8 has a trunk popper spring. I don't think it completely opens the boot, but it could perhaps give you ideas.
So not sure of the exact condition of my struts at all.
They are still good and work, hold the boot up just fine.
disconnecting one causes the boot to fall.
not sure if one should be able to support the boot as the boot is heavy.
the struts don’t really wanna open the boot at all, they really seem to wanna hold the boot at whatever position i put it at.
so they have the strength to hold the boot but not the force to push it at all
so not sure if this is normal or if maybe the boot struts are worn.
right now i am tossing up 2 ideas.
standard struts are 118mm throw with 540N eject force.
so maybe i can find same same size and same throw length but with a higher eject force.
Or option 2.
option 2 is using a spring to pull counter to the strut and pull the strut open.
so the problem with this is mounting the springs. I can easily loop them over where the strut attaches to the hinge but the other end of the spring would need to be mounted inline with the boot channel. So i would need to install a hook on the underside to hook the spring in.
Would think about riveting or screwing in a u hook inside the boot. (Using some epoxy also to give a waterproof seal as it would be holes in the boot drain chan!el.
Ok, so sometimes the simple solution is the best solution.
so these springs are designed to pull on the strut.
when the boot is closed they become under tension.
so as soon as the boot is popped they want to remove the stress and return to relaxed state. in doing so they pull on the boot struts and begin to open to boot.
at some point the boot struts take over and push the boot all the way open.
simple yet effective.
physics for the win.
a mechanical connection is always much more reliable than an electrical option imo.

also just something to note.
as the springs are under tension as you close the boot, the boot requires a bit more force to shut it (not too much so that it is annoying) but enough that it is noticeable and will stop the boot from slamming ****.
Spud, you did it, and its perfect! The struts just aren't strong enough without springs. This is the way it should have been done by the factory. That lid is heavy and it is very annoying when it falls and slams shut. Nice work. It is now on my list of useful mods.
