Question Best fuel pump options?

Any thoughts on the best fuel pump options?

The Jaguar part number is JLM12204

Checking Rock Auto:

CARTER P88023 Includes Tanks Seals, Grommet, Wire Harness, and Clamps
In-Tank
$48.99

SPECTRA PREMIUM/COOLING DEPOT SP1277 {#JLM12159, JLM12204} Failure to install a new fuel strainer (where applicable) will void warranty
Strainer Included w/ Pump
$56.79

AIRTEX E8285 Pump & Strainer Set
$61.79

DENSO 9510008 Electric
$65.79

HELLA H75014421 {#JLM12204}
42GPH HI; 43.5PSI; 12V; IN-TANK
$68.79

DENSO 9500172 {#9500183} Pump & Strainer Set
$69.79

CARTER P72252 {#JLM12159, JLM12204} In-tank Pump & Strainer Set
$71.79

DELPHI FE0200 {#JLM12159, JLM12204} Electric
In-Tank
$77.79

I would personally lean toward the Denso 9500172 which includes the strainer/sock, or maybe the Hella?

Of course, I'll need two of them since I have the XJR.

Thoughts?

This is not a job you’ll want to do again anytime soon. I’d go with the Denso.

Denso sounds good to me but all the others except 'Spectra' are known name brands in my mind.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if there's a bit of "label engineering" on that list, though.

Cheers

I'd rather do the fuel pump 3 times than the water rail gaskets once! But then, I don't have the supercharger....if I did I'd probably up that to 6:1!

Al, eBay has pumps that are direct-fit for less than $15, including the intake strainer. I'd recommend fitting an in-line check valve in the outlet of each, but then I'd recommend that with a $50-$100 pump as well.

NA fuel tank has mounting provisions for the 2nd pump. That really doesn't appear to add anything appreciable to the job...only doubles the expense of whatever you spend on the pump. The real labor is in disconnecting the tubes underneath. Everything else is quite the breeze.

Don't forget to hook up the in-tank harness when putting it all back together!

I remember reading something about the X300 fuel pumps; a Jaguar document claims that X300's fuel pumps were made by Denso with special adaptation to match the X300. There are of course many cheap knock-offs on eBay (yes around US$15 a piece - wonder how the manufacturers and sellers make a profit) which might do the job, but coming to think of the hassle involved in replacing the in-tank fuel pump (twin pumps in the case of the XJR), I would play it safe with Denso pumps.

I did an X300 fuel pump not long ago and the original was a Denso, so that would be my recommendation. I lack aholbro1's courage to use cheap no-name pumps, but I second his recommendation of adding check valves while you're at it. The original check valves are known to fail over time, leading to hard starting, low fuel pressure, etc., especially when the FPR also fails.

Just for the record, other known Jaguar electric fuel pump OEMs include Bosch, Walbro and Pierburg. Airtex, Hella and Delphi are also Jaguar OEMs for other types of parts.

To confirm Doug's suspicions about brand engineering, I recently purchased an Airtex pump for an XJ40 (because I couldn't find an OE Walbro) and the actual pump in the Airtex box was ... a Walbro.

Cheers,

Don

BTW, looks like this also was recently discussed in the X308 forum:

Some follow-up, bought the Denso 9500172 and it was completely "plug and play", and is clearly the OEM item.

I didn't have to modify/splice the electrical connector, and it fit the factory mount just as the original.
