Default Clunk clunk clunk

Hi Guys, I have a 94 XJ40 with the X300 rear suspension arrangement.

I've got a persistent clunk over ruts and potholes but car is nice and smooth on the highway. In the front, I've replaced the shocks and both upper cushions and and lower shock bushes, all OEM.
In the rear, I've replaced the shocks (Bilstein), so lower bushes and upper isolators got done too.
After replacing all this stuff, the clunk still was still there, maybe not as severe for sure, but she still isn't riding like I imagine it should.

Chasing down this clunk and not getting anywhere, I replaced the rear springs and the large sub-frame mounts, again all OEM.

Still clunky - bummer!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Larry

Larry,

Rear shock upper bushings are the most common cause, but you've renewed those. I can't recall if you addressed the driveshaft center bearing or transmission mount, but those come to mind.

I guess those are next - I do have vibration on deceleration which I've read is a symptom of centre bearing ..How do I check the trans mount? how much movement is "normal"?

Cheers Don

I don't know if there's a spec for movement, but if you've never rebuilt the transmission mount, it's time... It's not hard, just look up the info in the Jag-Lovers archive about the mistake in Haynes about the order in which to reassemble the parts. I think Groove was one guy who made note of it.

Here are photos showing the driveshaft center bearing replacement:

Default it's prybar time

Hey Larry, set the stands under each side of the rear suspension,so it is loaded with the weight of the car, good lighting, and a long heel bar.

With a little careful prying, you will spot the metal to metal contact point.

Good idea to check exhaust hangers too.
After I replaced the rears in Cin's car, there was a noticeable 'thup thup' going over speed bumps etc.,but after some miles on the new goodies, things have settled down

Hang in there!

Hi Don, already had a look at your centre bearing pages last night, looks doable and on the cards for sure ..the trans mount, well, I need to see what parts need replacing in that unit and where I can source them. Looks like less of a "big job" than the centre bearing so probably that'll be first on the list - the cold weather approaches and I'm working under a carport so hopefully I can get on with these jobs before the deluge comes along!

cheers

Larry

Our '93 still has issues, but none of them has to do with a bushing or bearing!
