Diff gear whine
Hey gents,
I bought a 95 XJ6 a few months back and have spent most of the time repairing it and taking it on small trips here and there. Couple weeks ago I drove it about 60 miles and started hearing a whine from the rear (only when gas peddle is pressed) so I figured i need to changed the diff fluid, just in case. I drained it and maybe half a quart came out. Well I filled it up with good fluid, but the whine hasn't gone away. It still drives good and smooth but now I'm worried the gears might be messed up. Does anyone know if I'm causing more damage by driving it still or is the noise just a nuisance now?

There is the thing where the Diff grease fill plug that has a vent screen it it clogs not all tput shaft seals lowering the grease for the future runs and eventually the output shaft bearings left or right so looking at these bearings change if your case is trueowing the expansion gas as the Diff heatesponding to something I would have to recollect and is probably the vehical speed but could be something else with input from others
s up to stay at unpressurized , this pushes the Diff grease to blow through the ou
The sound as I have witnessed is a ticking sound corr
You can replace these bearings without Diff removal as many have done thereselves
Pics coming

These would be the 4 parts needed times 2 for each side if your case
I would not go E - bay as may get subpar manufacture bearings

The HU15 was used in the XJ40 and X300.
It has a bad habit of needing pinion bearings when it starts to get loud.
I have done a dozen or more over the years for pinion bearings,
Not hard to do, just a lot of labor.

Would the pinion bearing whine Vs, a ticking of the output shaft bearings as witness myself in person on an other X300 ?
Ticking only happened on throttle load from my and not his ( unconfirmed ) recollection
He has lost most of his grease which links the 2 and still has to clean breather / fill bolt
Location of the leak irrelevant as the lack of lubricate the issue
There is time ( skills / tools minimum ) involved on the repair only if the input bearing can be done with Diff still installed

The BLACK X across the color label is the indication of LIMITED SLIP.(the color bar label is the ratio)
The pinion bearings are replaced from both the front and rear when the crownwheel and carrier is removed.
The pinion bearings are a severe taper that I only found at the Jaguar parts dept so I bought them there.
All the other bearings were available at supply houses so I bought them as SKS or TIMKEN replacements.
The carrier and stub axle bearings might be OK and not need replacement?(shims are placed back in original locations)
The pinion nut I just marked with a punch so I could tighten to the same location for preload.
I think it is about 14 hours total for rebuild including R&R.

Great info from the experienced
So , no way around having to remove whole Diff for input pinion bearing ? outputs not so
Item 22 as inside casting case large bevel gear ( crownwheel )
From what I heard keeping track of shims and replacement important ( obvius to experienced )
Should he take the gamble and replace easier outputs as can be replaced on car ?
Or is the evidence or can get the evidence that points to input pinion and not output ( sound patterns )..... ( statoscope while on jacks )..... ( engine load or no load )...... ( cornering , but this may be wheel bearing test under changing side load / bearing race taper )

This is all great info and I appreciate all the comments. Just out of curiosity, because the whine is only there when pressure is applied to the throttle, wouldn't that eliminate a bearing? I feel like if it were a bearing the whine would be there all the time (pressing the gas or coasting). I'm also not sure if it is limited slip or not. When I got the oil for it I didn't get any limited slip addictive because I couldn't find anything saying if it was or not, I hope I didn't screw that up
I beleive there is a side load on a bearing as the torque is resisted like bringing car up to speed
This line of thought if valid points to the input / pinion bearing
In my one witnessed rear end noise on an other X300 I think there was load no load change and seemed to emit more from one side as if possible , migrate down left or right short shafts to the wheels
Might be a consideration in battle plan to choose the lesser battle of replacing the rear wheel bearings to cover that base before the more difficult tasks , still not 100 % sure of the magic bullet in my opinion me not the one committing effort wise to the work
Fortunately the Jaguar Diff repair is not such a dead end in the cost viability , just the not too high of a skills level and avail parts in your favor
There is the TSB on removing the output bearings retainer which makes it more manageable to not having a press to remove
