HELP!!! MOT Tuesday and door handle broke
Got home this afternoon, went to open door and click, oops, loose driver's interior handle dead
Got out by winding window down and opening from outside reckoning it's the little clip again (that wee green thing that slots onto handle mechanism) has popped out and can be easily popped in again
No such luck - cable has given up again (just at that little green beggar!)
So, it's Friday afternoon, MOT at 13:50 Tuesday, obviously being unable to open driver's door from inside is immediate fail - inner panel of door now completely off (thankfully i found old switch panel for windows which is sitting in front of seat so I can continue to get out by getting window down and using outside latch)
Thinking is, to avoid (a) crimps all over the place and baling wire as a stop gap (assuming I can get said wire tight enough to work which will be an absolute pain) and (b) said wire will doubtless fail rapidly, I'll replace cable with.... cycle brake cable (not my idea, another local Jag enthusiast who I respect immensely), hopefully being able to use cable nipple from bike wire at latch end, feed through original sleeving and somehow (probably electrical connectors) attach to inner handle, preferably through that damned little l-shaped piece that goes through the inner latch
So heading down tomorrow morning to see bicycle specialist at local Halfords who might be able to sell me cable I can work with
Any thoughts or suggestions? Remember, time is limited...MOT Tuesday, work Monday and will likely take me time to reassemble inner door panel - I'm thinking this should work if I can get the length/tension right
Having the inner door panel completely off has alerted me to a later to be addressed (hopefully, if the MOT gods smile on me) concern - skinny little fingers were in at the bottom of the door and it was damp and icky which can't be good - not sure how to dry and clean out before rustbusting and high quality inner protecting (Bilt-Hamber does spring to mind - no association) so suggestions on that welcome - if I get driver's door sorted will likely spend time doing all of them
Thanks
