High idle problem x300r et al.
I'm looking at buying a 96 XJR, but it has a few issues... large ones. The car starts and idles at close to 2500RPM. The TPS has been changed along with several other throttle components. The owner has service history, so i can check what was done, but from what I gather the parts put in were quite extensive. The research i've done on the forum, but it addresses problems with idle closer to 1500. I don't really know where to begin, though from my experience with w126 era mercedes i'm lead to believe that it's an ecu problem.
The car also has 140xxx KM, but that said it has badly worn side bolsters, worse than i've seen on 300,000+ KM bmw e34's. Are these odometers rolled back? Or could it have just been a really fat original owner, or are they just more fragile than i'd be use to in their German counterparts.
The car has the big 17in rims, but the spare is a 15, but on an original era pirelli, would this have been a normal spare for the car?

Going back through your posts, I can see you've been looking for a Jaguar for over two years. With the engine and interior issues, this one sounds like it could be a lot of trouble. Better to expand your search area and travel to get an example without problems the current owner can't fix.

Simply replacing the TPS will get you all sorts of trouble.
The TPS must be configured to the ECM or sometimes you can cut slots in the sensor to set the resistance to the old TPS setting.
PDU, WDS etc. must be used to perform a throttle setup.
You might just as well do the O2 orientation and throttle pedal kickdown all at once while the computer is 'hooked-up'.
Here are some other TBSs for other causes of high idle.

Yup, stay away! My 96 was purchased in good shape, thinking I'd need a grand or two to sort out a few things. Well, I've now spent over the purchase price in repairs. Would I have bought it if I'd have known? Nope. I could have purchased a faster newer model if I was going to pay that amount up front. Do I still like my XJR? Yes. Am I keeping it? Yes.
Heart vs mind, crystal clear: there's nothing more expensive than a cheap Jag!

I think you're all right, I'll have to pass on this one. I'll offer him a couple grand for it so I have buffer space on the gamble being fixable. If he doesn't take it, I'll wait until I can find another in the colour combination that I'm looking for.
