That seems like a very reasonable cost estimate for all of that work. I won't be surprised if it takes the shop more than 10 hours to complete it.

Tcas, Since your under ther, just change the transmission mount as well.
ALL YOUR noises will disappear.
I had all of them new and used, trust me.........

Hi Tcasmarcus,

The replacement of brake parts, anti-roll bar links, shock bushings and tie rod ends is straightforward, so no problem with your friend doing that if he follows the factory Workshop Manual for torque specifications and such. For the bushing replacement he will need at least a 5- or 6-ton hydraulic press and an assortment of cups and adapters to fit the control arms and bushings in your car, or possibly a heavy-duty "bolt type" bushing replacement kit (though I can't guarantee that will be sufficient for all of the bushings). If he owns a press and has experience using it, he can probably do it. I have lots of photos of this work in the albums at the link in my signature.

just a little update. no bushings changed yet. My mate is on Holiday but he'll tackle the front suspension in a week or so. in the meantime i also decided to buy new shocks and spring isolators. got bilstein for the front and boge for the rear as those were the only option available from britishparts.

hoping to have the shocks installed within a couple of weeks.
I am of course hoping all these parts will drastically improve the ride, but at the same time I fear it will solve nothing. I know my steering rack has play in it, and I have a bad feeling it's also causing this horrible sensation when driving over speedbumps.. time will tell i guess.

 

4 new shocks installed. like a different car now. it sits about 2cm higher . 3 of the old shocks were pretty much shot, and all of them most likely 23 year old. It is much better to drive and most of the noises are now gone. I still hear a small thump from the rear boot when going over speedbumps so I might have to investigate that further. maybe it is exhaust or something lose in the boot. Anyway, much better now.

the garage said it would be a 3 hour job but used 7 hours. still only paid for 3, so that is a very fair deal.

 

All bushings and parts in the front suspension overhaul kit from britishparts.co.uk is now changed and the car is transformed. It is a completely different sensation when going over potholes and speedbumps. It feels tight and the knocking feel in the steering wheel is gone. Changing all shocks also made a big difference, but the bushings were the final piece in the puzzle. Alignment is not 100 % yet but that will be fixed next week. Step by step this car is returning to its former glory.

 

British Parts does provide a full package of bushings that greatly helps DIYers find all parts and in great prices in one place for fixing their suspensions. However, my experience with their bushings is that they may be somewhat short-lived. See my recent post #7 of this thread entitled "xjr upper front shock bushings".
