Question How to change boot struts?

Hello,

I want to change boot struts on my Daimler Six. The side closer to boot i have released, but side closer to rear seats - I can not get to it because of the tank.

How does it release? Can there be any way back from the rear seats?

Thanks.

The way I release the boot lid gas strut next to the fuel tank is to use a 24" long bent prybar and force the ball & socket apart.

Both ends of the gas strut are the same and release the same way but there is really not enough room to pry the little metal retainer.

I spray some penetrating oil on the ball/socket and pry them apart. I have never broken the ball from the body and the new one 'pops-on' with the same 'prybar' technique.

It sounds 'brutal' but it has worked for me for decades.

You get a good mechanic friend that knows what he is doing. Put him in the trunk and let him have at it. That's what I did. He had so much fun he didn't even charge me anything.

With a head-mounted flashlight and a long screwdriver with a flat tip about 3/16" (5 mm) wide, it is possible to remove the inner socket the "proper" way, but Bob's method is so much easier, why bother?

Cheers,

Don

Well...if you happen to have the fuel tank out to renew the pump......the struts are a very easy change! Otherwise, I like Bob's method.

I just spent some time at it and used a very small flat head to release the clip enough to pull the forward end off the ball. The only "trick" is to release the aft end, proping the boot with a stick, so there's no tension on the front end. It's so tight in there that it was just better to do it blind. With some ESP you can find the notch in the socket and twist your itty bitty flat head in and push the clip up the groove, to the open position. Had to pull the harnesses out of the way on the passenger side. Took an hour. Payed myself $100, Woo-woo!

ps - Now I know, that you have to be dead to be transported in the boot to your final "secret, GoodFella's" resting place.
