I have locked the keys in the trunk - 1997 XJ6 (VDP) if it makes difference.
Is there anyone out there that that has done the same and can walk the through opening it through the little holes where the number plate attaches to the boot?

I cant remember if there is a step by step here, but "jaglovers" has a step by step in their XJ-40 on-line book.

 

3 Ways to open the boot

1. On the spare key press the remote boot opener
2. Press the boot opener on on the dashboard (next to the fuel cap button)
3. You can use the spare key (not the valet key) in the trunk lock hole

You guys have a fuel cap release/unlock button on Aus/NZ cars?

On my US spec XJR I don't have any fuel cap release/unlock button at all. Interesting... another regional variant?

Recently I did the same thing, unfortunately with a dead battery. Since the '95 doesn't have a keyhole on the trunk (boot), the spare key wasn't an option. Under the hood (bonnet) the positive battery terminal where the starter cable is attached is on the passenger side very close to the firewall. I hooked jumper cables to that terminal and opened the trunk normally.

After I posted, I re-read your post & it hit me---The "little holes" to which you refer is the key hole. Just insert your spare key. If you don't have one, then you might try my solution

 

It has the key hole in the tag on the boot. But many corrode and get stuck. The "little hole" he is refering to is behind the licence plate. XJ-40 owners have known about the break in secret for years. Boot can be opened with a stiff piece of wire or really thin screwdriver.

 

My bad. I never noticed on my XJ40, which has now been retired.

 

Took delivery of a 2005 X-type with only 70k miles Saturday April 25th. Primary driver is my 17-year-old son. Lucky boy.

Seller only had one key. So after consulting this board, the first thing I do is order a non-oem key/fob blank on eBay. When it arrives I will get it cut and coded by a capable locksmith saving a few dollars from the dealership cost. It is in transit from China as I write this. I am on top of it.

Yesterday my dear son plans on having a picnic with his girlfriend after playing the town par 3 with his buddies. (Very lucky boy.) He pull up to his friend's house, loads the golf bags next to the food and blanket in the trunk and closed the lid.

Of course he realizes the only key is also in the trunk. Of course the car is locked. Local PD helps unlock the doors triggering the alarm, but the mighty trunk is impregnable. I arrive and start searching this forum for solutions. A bit difficult on a smart phone.

Did not get too deep and assumed I was stuck at the dealer's mercy. Luckily my insurance covers tow to dealership. (This forum was very helpful in unlocking the transmission. Great help.)

Talk to dealer this morning and asked them if they could use their magic just to open the trunk, hoping to get a second key on-the-cheap. No luck. They need to make a new key, code a new transmitter, etc. My son get's home from school and we go to pick up the car. With tax $498.42. And yes, they did recode the key taken from the trunk.

Small silver lining. The bag of ice has kept the picnic from spoiling. An expensive lesson, but the car is back on the road. Still need to decide how much my son will contribute from his part time job.

The fates were still not done with me. On my way home from the dealer, I get a text from the seller that he found the second key and is dropping it in the mail. You cannot make this up!

 

Thanks to everyone for the posts and assistance regarding locking my keys in the boot.
I ended up going the the Jag shop in Fort Myers, FL and pursched a new key - $55.00
It still did not open the boot after I recieved it, I got VERY lucky, the tech was messing aroung with the new key in the boot and opened it, there were my keys. The new key never did open the boot after that and was tricky starting the motor and opening the door. I pick up another new key tomorrow and hopefully it works fine.
