Default Lower radiator support

It appears as if I bent my lower radiator support possibly on a curb or something. My question is this is bolted to the frame correct? I should be able to just replace the support and with luck the frame wasn't bent?

Hi Time-Pilot,

You don't mention the model or year of your car, but assuming it's an X300, it does appear that the lower radiator support can be removed. You may even be able to reshape your existing support if it's not too badly damaged. See the parts diagram at the link below:

Cheers,

It's a 1995 XJR, or I should now say it "was." The entire front frame member is bent where the lower panel attaches. Off to call the insurance company, I'm sure they will total it.

If the front subframe mounting points are not affected, it may be possible to repair the damage...

The damage is to the subframe itself. It's about 2 inches forward of where it needs to be. I can't even get the fans back in with the lower mount removed. I must have smacked it in just the wrong place.

My first thought was to cut and weld the mount back about two inches. which may be possible but I see what the insurance company has to say first.

I'm sure it could be pulled with a frame machine but I doubt they will go for it with such an old car. Shame it's been good to me and it still pulls like a train.

(and I just replaced that damn spider hose)

Tough break.

If the insurance company does indeed write it off would you mind sharing what they offer?

I'm right on the cusp of cancelling comp/collision insurance on my '95 XJR.

Cheers

I've drawn box around the crumpled section, it looks the same on the opposite side but not as bad.

And of course the remains of the fan.

We did the exact same thing going over a tire retread that was laying in the road. No where to go and I ran right over it. I didn't notice anything was wrong until we got home and the fans would not shut off. I looked and the wiring was smushed against the one of the bars in the suspension. Long story short, our insurance company repaired it. It was a $3000 job at the best body shop in 2007. They replaced the bent rad support frame members and the rad support and the rad. They painted under there as well. I think at this point, $3k will total the car. If I were you and it was worth it to repair it, go outside of the insurance company and pay out of pocket, or see if you can bend them back to somewhat straight. Best of luck to you.

$3875 Includes new fan, bumper, belly pan and assorted other bits and pieces. Labor is minimal, 1 hour on the frame machine to get it lined back up.

Insurance company agreed that it's looks like a new car, runs like one to, so no need to send it to the crushers!

That estimate is unbelievable, but I'm thankful that your beautiful Jag won't be crushed!

Cheers,

Don
