Default the ol'oil filter dilemma..

What filters are you all using?
My 3.2 X300 had an oil change last week and I notice the mechanic has 'downgraded' me from a Jaguar genuine filter to an orange one, Fram I think.
Anyway, i am now aware of big end rumble for 3 seconds from cold start, which corresponds to oil warning light coming off at 3 secs and pressure gauge coming up. I don't recall this before.
So I rang the mechanic who thinks the generic filter should have a non-return valve, but I am not convinced.
He has stopped supplying the genuine jag filters as they are hard to obtain in NZ and are getting expensive - NZD$45. He is now getting me half a dozen, and I shall have a stash... much cheaper than run big-ends

It is not the oil - that remains the same - Castrol magnatec 10w-40

What are you guys out there using?

Hey Al I use these Premium Oil Filters

I buy them from Amazon in a box of 10 as well as fuel filters also from Bosch
If you do go with them make sure the oil filters are Bosch premium ones

I did a lot of research on filters I originally wanted to get the puralotor pure one filters but they don't make one for the AJ16 engine so went to the Bosch both my Indies are very impressed with them

They cost $6.95US each on Amazon I figure 10 should last me a while this is the second time I bought these the first 10 i bought was when I had my 92 XJ40 Sov same filter only just ran out of the first 10 last year

I like to have them in stock same as fuel filters

I also buy filters in bulk for my Jeep as well with the Jeep I was using the pure ones from purolator but Bosch for my fuel filters but rockauto had a sale on German Mahle filters $2.50US so I bought 10 of them for the Jeep

Make no mistake - Fram are junk.

I've spent a lot of time over the years (nothing recent, though) pouring over filter reviews - not the armchair reviews, but the ones where the reviewers cut the filters open to see how they are constructed and the quality of the components used.

Based on the last in-depth review (construction/price point), I've settled to use Wix on all my vehicles.

Caveat - Last in-depth review I read was about 3-4 years ago. Can't find the popular review page at the moment, but here's one that turned up, providing a quick overview of various popular filters cut open:

Part number L30381

Some very brief and non-verified Googling suggests the Purolater stopped production but various vendors appear to still have stock on-hand.

Since you've already stocked up on filters this isn't of much interest but others might be able to snap up some remaining inventories at bargain prices.

Cheers

FWIW

I've had no problems with AC Delco PF964, Bosch 72147, Wix 51231, and of course the Jaguar EBC9658

thanks guys
I will revert to genuine parts asap
Even at $45 (USD 40 ish, GBP 25 ish) it is well cheaper than a new set of big ends!

AMSOIL MANN-FILTERS Oil Filters

This is the filter I use: Mann W930-13. I order it through Amsoil because it comes delivered to my door. I love buying car parts online in my pyjamas at 2300h.....

Thanks Doug pity I bought so many of the Bosch ones
I am pretty happy with the Bosch ones they are made in USA so must be okay

I Just read on bitog that Bosch and Mann bought purolator filter division and the Bosch premium is a pure one in disguise making me even happier

I am not at all happy with what Bosch considers to be the correct filter for the AJ27. They are shorter than OEM so that they can get the one part number to also fit the AJ33. Good for them, not so good for the consumer.

Never forget history. It all went downhill for Fram when Honeywell bought them. To pay for the purchase, the filter engineers started to get orders to cut materials and manufacturing cost. Good for Honeywell, not so good for the consumer.

I've used the Fram Tough Guard and Ultra, respectively on my wife's Explorer but not on the Jag. For the Jag I've only used the Wix Doug mentions above - but rebadged by Carquest, or the Mann W930-13. So far so good with those 2 oil filters on the XJ6.

BTW, there was a report in the X308 section just a couple of days ago on a Purolator filter. Cold start tapping with the Purolator, no tapping with the Jaguar OEM filter. That hints at either no anti-drainback valve, or a malfunctioning valve.

I noticed a distinct size difference with Bosch premiums

My first Bosch premium filter's where larger they where for the AJ6 engine XJ40 I owned previously

When I ordered a box of ones that where specific to the AJ16 engined XJR they where smaller

I asked on the forums about this and most guys had experienced the same thing and from what I gatherd wont hurt the engine

I bought a box of them so I will have to just go with them I suppose

Did the ole online research couple years ago. My pick for best priced quality oil filter is Wix. Use it on all my vehicles.

My mechanic told me many years ago to always use dealer brand name filters so that's what I've done and continue to do. Nothing but Jag filters. My 1995 XJ now has 220K miles on it and doesn't burn oil and runs like new.

I think the Jag filters are worth the extra cost.

My car has a new Jaguar-branded filter on it as of two days ago. It is stamped "Made for Jaguar. Made in UK"

Since it has been on, the oil pressure gauge jumps up within a second, and there is no big end rumble.
Before that the orange Fram gave variable rumble and delays upto 4 secs after starting for pressure to come up. I believe the return valve was faulty - no more generic filters for me.
Worth the extra $$.
My mechanic got 6 in for me, so I am set for a few years...
