Default A Post Tweeters Removal?

Today I picked up a working used headunit for my car and finally i'm able to play some music, now i'm curious. both of my A-Post Tweeter have no sound, do these tweeters blow easily? and does anyone have removal instruction for it?

I'm curious since the OEM Tweeter is hard to source, would an aftermarket tweeter work with the oem headunit + amp?

Jacky

The A pillar trim just pulls off. I say 'just' - I managed to tear mine last time I tried as some eejit had managed to glue it to the windscreen. As far as I remember, the tweeter comes off with the trim and there's just a two pin electrical plug to undo.

Any replacement unit of a similar size, impedance and wattage should be fine.

oh nice! it looks pretty hard to pry off lol, looks like I'm gonna go with an aftermarket tweeter and hopefully i don't break the pillar.

I you have a chance, it would be great to see some photos posted of the removal, how the panel is attached, and how the tweeters are removed/installed. A general "how to".

BTW, Parts Express has some nice and inexpensive tweeters, especially some soft dome Vifa units that sound very good.

1995 VDP X300 tweeters are on the dash board not the A pillar.

Did some research and to answer my own question.
The Non premium audio has tweeter in defrost vent.
The premium audio has a tweeter in a pillar

Here's the rear part of the trim. I haven't got a picture of the reverse of the front one, but it's much the same. Don't forget to remove the grab handles.

What's even more interesting is that the tweeters are in the dash even in the premium audio equipped cars, but they just aren't hooked up.

So you may be able to get them and use them as replacements.

That's interesting. I didn't know that. I knew the speaker grill was there.

Al, did you ever figure out a way to remove the vent trim in the dash? I have a crazy rattle in the XJR but I haven't figured out how to remove anything past the IR sensor

That's exactly what I did with my '96 XJ12. Both weren't working when I got the car.

The tweeters are slightly different, but are the right size to fit. The connector is different, too, with the dash-mounted tweeters having a two-pin connector, while the A-post mounted tweeter has a two-pin pigtail.

ALSO, the biggest difference is that the dash-mounted tweeters have capacitors wired to them, as these were meant to be fed directly from the headunit itself, and the capacitor is needed to filter out the lower frequencies that the tweeters can't handle. The A-post mounted tweeters don't have capacitors as they are fed through a separate channel from the Premium Amplifier which does all the necessary filtering itself, eliminating the need for the capacitor.

The dash tweeters are a bit deeper, but once you remove the little plastic cap on the bottom of the tweeter (which holds the connector and capacitor) the tweeter is essentially the same depth as the A-post ones. You'll need to solder on the pigtail from the A-post tweeters, making note of the polarity (the plastic cap has the + and - markings on it, take note before you pop the cap off as it will fit either way...

Not yet... winter appears to be done, so with the longer days and nice weather I can tackle these little projects.

It appears that the center panel with the IR sensor just pulls up and out and is held in with some clips.

If I recall then the two vent "wings" unclip or perhaps have a screw that was under the center panel, then they lift from the center and pull off.

....at least that's what it appears from ones I've looked at that have been removed already.

Now, I'm not sure what to do to get them stopped rattling yet. Will have to see what is actually moving and vibrating together once they are out.

The center IR panel clips onto the ends of the wing pieces with spring clips, and the wing pieces are held down with fir tree fasteners that engage into plastic bushings that are inserted into holes in the dash cover.

The right hand end of the vent wing kept popping up on my car. While the windshield was out for a replacement, I put new bushings and fir-tree fasteners on.
