rattling noise in the back update
hi everyone,
for a while now, I've had the typical rattling noise from the trunk area associated with worn rear shock upper bushings, so I ordered 2 pairs of bushings per side and replaced them. The old ones looked pretty worn, and I figured my rattling was gone forever... so I thought...
after everything was put back together, took it for a quick drive and not a few seconds had passed until I heard the dreaded rattling noise again...
you can imagine the disappointment.. I will have to redo all the work again and replace the entire rear shocks
I always thought that the rattling rear end was attributed to the upper shock mounts, but I guess it's the whole shock assembly that does it with age?
anyone with a similar experience?
cheers

There's the lower bushing to consider, as already mentioned, and occassionally a shock will develop an internal rattle.
But, before going through tons of additional work, are you entirely sure the rattle is related to the shocks? Though shock absorber noises are very common on these cars, your noise might be something else entirely.
Cheers

thanks guys
I am fairly confident it's coming from the shock. I tried pushing the tire up (car on the lift), and I was able to reproduce the sound on the passenger side.. quiet as a mouse on the driver's side. I also visually inspected everything down there and everything appears in order.
whether it's the bushing or the shock itself would be a different story. I couldn't tell, but last thing I'd like to do is to do this job for the 3rd time.. imagine replacing the lower bushing and the noise is still there .. lol
I will deal with it next week.. Bilsteins are not too expensive at about $100/side.
I will write back if that address the problem.

I thought it was the shocks in my XJR as well turned out to be rubbish in the spare wheel well cleaned and vacumed re glued the Velcro straps to the floor all good
I replaced my rear shocks first as all the guys on the forums said it was rear shock bushes most likely I at least have new shocks all-round LOL
