Default rear view mirror clip

Hey guys. 97 XJR. Mirror darkened around edges. Took it down, to send to Scott for rebuild. But the little metal clip inside the mirror, that clips the mirror to the metal part on the windshield, broke. Scott says he can't help with that. Any suggestions? Btw, the clip is held to the mirror via a small torx screw.

Hi superchargedtr6,

You might check eBay for a salvaged mirror that also has the fluid leak in the glass so you can buy it cheap and use only the clip. If you don't see one listed, it might be worth contacting any seller offering '97 XJ parts to see if they may have one.

You might be able to fabricate a new clip, but I suspect the clips are heat treated to a spring temper, which is difficult (but not impossible) to do at home.

Cheers,

Don

Don, searched through, and found one for 23.00 with free shipping. On its way. Am sending the mirror to radarmirror tomorrow to have it rebuilt.

Default Interior Rear view mirror clip repair

For my 97 XK8, while trying to adjust the clip, so that the mirror would not vibrate, I broke one side of the clip this afternoon. I fixed the thing by fashioning a new flange out of some scrap metal for only the broken side of the clip. It fits "inside" the original clip - held in place by the torx screw (which is still also holding the broken original clip in place). (I was lucky that it worked, but the mirror is now very solidly mounted.)

Curious, are ours made by Magna Donnelly or Genetex like the ones fitted to late 90s+ BMWs?

Do ours eventually leak like the BMW units and damage the interior? Very interested on this point in case I need to take some preventive maintenance so my interior doesn't get damaged if/when my mirror leaks. It isn't discolored, but it clearly doesn't work anymore.

Here is an interesting thread covering the issues seen with the BMW units, and some DIY repair tips:

E46 M3/E39 M5 Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirrors Faults & Fixes | TotalMCars.com

I've seen references to "Radar Mirror" that will repair the mirror, but the BMW guys seem to heartily endorse "Sybesma's Electronics". Google "auto dimming mirrors" and those vendors for some reviews.

I'm not sure who "Scott" is referenced above, but perhaps someone else can elaborate.

Scott is the guy that has radarmirror.com. He fixed mine. Very prompt, looks great. But yes, the mirror will leak, and ruin the wood on the console.

radarmirror.com isn't an active link.
I had my mirror redone by Sybesma's. $97 total cost, great job and fast!

The correct link for Radar Mirror is:

www.radar-mirror.com

....not endorsing either as I haven't used either service.

I did use radar mirror, and was in that range, I think 99.00. Did a great job, to him and back in about a week

A lot of information here about symptoms, removing and reinstalling the mirror, and repair services:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...acement-17719/

It's a 10 page thread, but well worth reading before removing the mirror.

Key tips in removing the mirror:

- lightly lubricate with some type of penetrating oil
- gentle pressure down and along the plane of the windshield, do not push, pull or twist or you may crack the glass

This looks very relevant and is useful info as well, detailing how to address loose rearview mirror mounts for the Jag:

Successfully removed the rearview mirror, sent to Scott at Radar-Mirror, received a rebuilt clean rearview mirror, installed back on the car. What a relief, I can see what is behind while driving. Scott's service was very prompt, and reasonably priced. I strongly recommend Scott.
