Question Is this "ring" important, or just junk?

Please see the attached photos. I found this plastic ring in the trunk rolling around beside the battery under the trunk liner.

I don't recognize it as anything important, but thought I'd post it here before tossing it out as random trash.

Thanks!
Al

Hi Al,

The only thing I can think of that would be important is the sealing ring for the fuel level sensor that mounts on the back face of the tank, but it doesn't look like the seal on our '93 or in the parts diagram (part 10):

Fuel Tank-4.0 Litre-Normally Aspirated-Unleaded-Usa - Parts For XJ Series from (V)720125 to (V)812255 (X300) | Jaguar Classic Parts UK

Cheers,

Don

Thanks.

It is a rigid plastic, not flexible at all.

I think it is likely some sort of junk, but thought I'd ask.

Al, I also have two of these rings stored neatly in the tire tool set of my 95 XJ12. To this day I still don't know what they are for. Thanks for asking the question I was afraid to ask!

Throw it away and 2 days later you'll find out what it's for and will cost a fortune to replace !

Default Could it be...????

The elusive headlight rings that are never present in the jack storage compartment?

The spaces are there in the polystyrene, but in all my years i've never seen what is actually meant to fit there

Lovely 250 mile round trip around the NW today - 250 miles, averaged 23mpg which is good for me who's used to city driving - and no-one annoyed me all day, until i got home and checked blackberry so now arranging tomorrow's floggings and beatings in submission - I love my job!

It looks like there may be an un-named ring between the EVAP Flange and the tank? If you look at the hole atop the tank where the EVAP fits into (between #13 & the tank), it sure looks like the ring in question:

Hi Suede,

If you are describing the ring that is directly on top of the tank (below part 13), I believe that is the mounting ring with bent metal tabs that is permanently welded to the tank and into which the evaporative flange ring twists to lock. Or were you describing another part?

Yep Don,

Upon closer inspection your are absolutely correct.

So, did we ever decide what they are? Something about a "headlight ring"?

Every Jag comes with one of these rings, it's called "The Circle of Life".

Heh, OK.... well I'll just save it under the spare tire until we figure out if it is important or junk.

Someone mentioned above that it is a "headlight ring" and there is a slot in the tire jack kit, but I didn't see any such slot or storage location. Maybe I missed it.
