Default Steering Rack Stiffening Bushes DIY

FYI, in the XJ40 forum I've just posted a DIY on making your own steering rack stiffening bushes like the ones that Jaguar installed on XJ40 and X300 XJRs but never made available as separate service parts:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...es-diy-134396/

Cheers,

Don

I used steel washers with no apparent detriment. I suppose they COULD make some noise, but that's what they put a radio in for, I figgur.

Hi Ross,

Was this on the X308? Since the X308's mounting brackets are not integral to the rack, I can see how that might be possible. Did you have to remove the boots/gaiters to slip the washers on?

Cheers,

Don

Could you have cut the washer in 2 to ease installation since it's wired it back together?

Hi Tim,

Do you mean the plastic bushes I made or the steel washers Ross used?

For the plastic bushes, only a slot was needed to fit the bushes - cutting them in half might have made them less stable.

I'm not sure how you would wire steel washer halves in place unless you machined a groove in the outer edge of the washers, which would probably be beyond the capability of most DIY mechanics.

Cheers,

Don

Don:
I should have looked more closely at what you were showing. Indeed, my bushes must have been on my XJS where the washers slipped in behind the rubber bushings. Sorry, my Alzheimers slipping in on me!

So these are already in place on the X300 XJR as delivered from the factory then?

...I'll have to remember to look when I get under there again

No, they were equipment for XJ40 XJR (TWR version), so X300 XJRs don't have those spacers.

FIY, these spacers can't be fitted to V12 models like XJ81 and X305, the bushings are a little thicker than L6 models.
So if anybody want to put these spacers to V12s the spacer must be made thinner.

Saved the drawing from the other thread to disk already

Wonder if the X308 and X300 racks have the same diameter at
the bush location.

Some time ago, there was a X308 owner who machined a set of
metal spacers which were essentially segmented washers with
interlocking grooves between the two segments. He offered to
machine some for other members, but that never materialised.

Thinking about it now, it would be easiest to start with standard
washers, cut the washers into segments and mill the matching
grooves.

On the other hand, I have seen urethane construction adhesive
used for suspension modifications on other boards.

It would be possible on at least the X308 to remove the bushings,
slather the interior and exterior of the bushings with adhesive,
reinstall as normal. Instant bonded bushings as seen in the
control arms. Of course on replacement, a lot of time will
need to be spent removing the now bonded rubber and
adhesive from the metal parts.

But, with a new set of bushings that have been well bonded
to a clean surface, the need for future replacement might be
many years away.

This method has the attraction of not requiring any precision
work at all.

I thought I read that he had difficulty getting it in. There was a slot cut with a band saw around the perimeter for a wire as shown in the photo below
