When buying my 1997 XJ6 I was only given 1 ignition key and no central locking fobs. The key situation I was able to resolve quite nicely. However, trying to source key fobs was another matter.
Despite the issues already dealt with in this forum regarding sourcing suitable working fobs, the time had come for me to explore installing a third party wireless remote central locking kit.
Now, I could live without key fobs sure....but unlocking the Jag by key can only be done at the driver's side and that can sometimes be a pain.
So, if the Jag has the ability to remotely lock/unlock...then I thought it should be able to.
So far, I understand that the two appropriate wires from the kit just splice into the lock & unlock trigger wires of the Security & Locking Module...the others just connect to +ve and -ve and Bobs your uncle. Around $40.00 will do it.
Also planning to T-Tap the lock/unlock trigger wires just forward of the Security & Locking Module (jammed up above rear/left wheel well).....the +ve to the battery...and then the -ves to, well...wherever on the body.
Then I should have a couple of shiny new fobs for my Jag...and my days of searching for replacement Jaguar (or dare I say SAAB) fobs will be consigned to history once and for all.
So, that's the plan. After reading the instruction manuals for the kit and consulting the factory electrical guide for the 1997 XJ6....I think my plan is sound.
If anyone has done this work already and have some tips, advise or know something I haven't thought of before I start ripping trim from the boot...let me know.
Otherwise those people online trying to sell cruddy old genuine Jaguar x300 key fobs for anywhere between $200 and $300 can go shove those fobs up your whats it.
I did this to a XJ6 SIII I had years ago. All doors on our cars lock and unlock in synch with and slaved to the drivers door.
My XJ6 was the same so all I had to do was fit a remote actuator to the drivers door mechanism in parallel with the existing mechanism and when I used the remote controller to lock/unlock the car the drivers door activated and the others followed.
Much simpler than fiddling with the existing electronics.
It will indeed work, I fitted this set up some ten years ago and it still work perfectly, I have yet to replace the remote batteries.
I have attached the instruction article I completed at the time.

****UPDATE FOR MY FELLOW AUSTRALIAN X300 OWNERS****
I started this thread with the intention of wiring in a third party central locking remote system.
However, in the mean time.....
I was also looking to source a compatible key fob from another auto maker that I could pair with the x300 Jaguar.
As a lot of you probably already know, the only compatible key fob is from the 900 & 9000 series SAABs. These fobs are known as LTQFM433 (only 433MHz is approved for use in Australia)
I was hesitent to try one as the cases are all marked 315MHz under the battery cover....yet I have recently seen some circuit boards online are marked FM433.00
Now, the fobs used in the American market have to be approved for use by the Federal Communications Commission in the USA...and the fobs have to display this approval. Also, fobs in the USA usually 315MHz.
So, I took a punt and purchased said SAAB fob with the FCC ID: LTQFM433 approval label. When it arrived, I opened her up and checked that the circuit board was marked FM433.00.....and indeed it was!
Paired it to Josie the Jaguar and all works....I'm of course stoked!!
Bottom line is that, especially for Australian owners, these SAAB fobs will certainly work with our Australian delivered x300 Jaguars.
They seem to be more readily availsble online and more affordable than the old original Jaguar fobs of the era.
Sorry, if all of the above is already common knowledge in this forum...but I was much relieved to know I didn't have to go forward with splicing in a third party remote central locking kit.
I was not particularly looking forward to doing that!
HAPPY DAYS!!
315MHz is molded into the plastic case in the battery compartment...yet it transmits at 433Mhz - confusing....
