Default Worthwhile or essential spares.

So, given the fact that most of our cars are getting on for 20 years old, what would you regard as a practical "first aid kit" mechanically speaking, that is.

I have my donor car full of useful bits and pieces and I am slowly stripping out useful parts, but I wondered, what would be best to fill my trunk with?

I am surprised and a little bit scared by the number of modern cars I see stranded on the side of the road and given the fact that I often have occasion to travel up and down to Dublin, about a 4 hour drive each way, I don't wish to find myself similarly stranded.

So, parts and tools. Aside from the under bonnet toolkit, what would you recommend? I already carry some hoses, coils, jump leads, fuses, relays, and I know you can't legislate for everything, but any thoughts appreciated.

CKPS seems to be an expected failure, I will buy one before I take another trip.

If you do my mod, a fuel pump can be swapped out in 20 minutes on the roadside. So I carry a cheap $20 fuel pump as well.

Will the CKPS simply swap over and then run as normal? Isn't there a set up/calibration procedure that requires garage input? Maybe I'm thinking of something else?

Thanks.

The crank sensor does not need calibrating. Just install and go!

That's a terrific question, sogood!

Here's a link to photos of the kit I assembled for our '93 XJ40. You'll probably need a slightly different assortment for an X300, but our kit covers the most common failure points on the XJ40.

Allan! How could I have forgotten duct tape!

I did forget to mention in my photo captions that I also keep a basic tool kit in the car (1/4 in. and 3/8 in. socket sets, screwdrivers, pliers, etc.), and if we're going to take it on a long journey I add a full tool kit (1/2 in. sockets, breaker bars, floor jack, etc.).

Cheers,

Don

Bulbs are already covered in the under trunk toolkit. Aside from that. I'm glad I have a tow bar fitted, just for pulling a little boat a short distance, but maybe I should consider hooking up a trailer?

My x300 is a daily driver and I want to continue to embrace that concept. I don't like the notion of every trip being fraught with potential disasters.

During last summer, a friend drove my car from Cork to Belfast, met up with me and after a coffee, I got in and returned back down to Kenmare, a round trip of about 580 miles. It didn't miss a beat and performed just fine. I know people with much younger cars who would be dubious of doing the same.

I know you can't cover every possibility and given that the xj40 is older and maybe more prone to issues at this stage, I understand your position.

Thanks very much for the response and your input, certainly food for thought!
