Robert,

Welcome to the Forums. When the Jag is sorted, please do an Intro in the New Members are.

A tad vague about your car???

Jaguar used XJ6 naming from 1968 to well into late 2000nds. Very different beasts from the start to the finish, and obviously very different sets of problems.

Let us know the Year, etc of your Jag XJ6, then members with the same vehicle can assist without guessing.

OK, thanks.

Your car is known in Jaguar talk as an X300.

That Tech Section is down the home page a tad.

Both mine did that when battery disconnect took place, and a simple "lock and unlock" of the car once the battery waa connected sorted them both. Also worked with both the S Types. Not sure on the X Type yet, never touched the battery.

"Will not start" is unclear. We need to know if the engine cranks but does not fire up, or if the engine does not crank. Two different problems.

Foot must be on brake to pull the shifter out of Park (ignition ON only). If the brake switch has failed, the shift lock won't release. Your brake lights will not work either, so that's easy to check.

The red "P" indicator on the shifter must be lit for the engine to crank (but it still might not fire up and run).

Some questions to define your issue towards solution

Which country . as there is a security inhibit in some markets ?

Does the starter relay click with your finger on it ?

Do you have starter rotation ?

Does the voltage sag on the instrument gauge drop under 11.4 volts during starter rotation ?

Does the fuel pump relay click with your finger on it ? you will feel 3 clicks if good in the start sequence as it relates to the fuel pump relay on / off / on

Do you have old / stale fuel in the tank ?

see page 17 and 19 for relay location in the file below :

You have to put your finger on the relays and not just listen for them as others close by in starting sequence

http://www.mediafire.com/file/45wwgj...0+1996+LWB.pdf

There is an issue with stored X300's with cylinder / rings bore not sealing for enough compression for a light off

2 easy fixes
