@users with new chains: are they quiet?
Hi all,
as some know, I changed all chains and tensioners on my AJ26 a few weeks ago. Luckily it wasn't too late.
I was expecting the engine to be quieter than before. Well it is a bit quieter but I still have the 'rattle'/'shatter' of chains running in my engine. I know that chains aren't the quietest method of timing an engine, but I think my V8 seems louder than my V12 and louder than my former Duratec HE in my old Volvo C30.
Are your engines quieter?
Cheers
Damien

I don't have rails. My really early AJ26 has the integrated injectors. It is def. the chains. You only hear them with the sunroof open and next to other cars...
Same here. I don't really hear any chain noise while my motor is running.

Thanks for your answers so far.
I was thinking: could it be the belt tensioner/pulley? I know the pulley sounded as if it was grinding some *****... I'll see if I can get a sound clip. It is def. rev-related. So either chains or belt... At least in my opinion.
Are the pulleys/belt tensioners known to fail?
Cheers

Okay, cheers for that! I know the non tensioning pulley made a few weird sounds... As written. So it wouldn't surprise me if it was that making all the noises. Luckily it only costs around €60 new from Jaguar...
Well, my chains are quiet *phew*
BUT the bearing in the pulley was really well worn... Here as a comparisson:
As you can hear, it grinds and crunches nastily... Where as the new (used) part and of later generation is quiet.
€20 invested pretty well. Didn't expect my car to be THIS quiet!

I think that pulley is my next issue: hearing some noise, but smelling burning rubber. Fortunately, have a a new new one in stock. Replaced the tensioning pulley three years ago.
Soon as it gets a bit warmer, I will pull the belt . . .
