Default 01 rearview mirror falling off - not locking on.

OK. I have read all of the posts I can find here on the stinking rearview mirror on this car. I bought the car used, and when it was delivered (shipped from far away) the thing had fallen off. So, I'm trying to put it back on, and it is always wobbly and in a short while, falls off again. The window mount is still on the window. I'm reasonably frustrated, and would LOVE to have your instruction on what to do to get it to stay on. Please! Thanks.

Here's a post on removing and replacing the mirror - hope it helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did see it, but it didn't seem to address my issue, which is that when I do the re-install, it is very, very loose, to the point where it falls off again. There is no "clicking" or clasping going on at all. I wonder if the clip in the mirror assembly is splayed out too wide, or something like that. I don't want to just "try" stuff at the risk of breaking my window or something. Any other thoughts, anyone? Thanks!

I had the same problem on a replacement mirror I purchased from a Junk Yard, where it appeared someone had pulled the mirror straight off the windshield as opposed to sliding it down. It looked like the spring clip had been spread apart. I was able to carefully bend the clip tighter using needle nose pliers. I removed the clip from the mirror first to prevent breaking the mirror 'Pot Metal', and I bent slowly to prevent breaking the spring steel. It worked just fine. Try bending small amounts at a time so you don't overtighten.

@Supersport good suggestion. I'll disconnect the clip from the mirror, tighten it a bit at a time, and fit it to the window clip before reinstalling in the mirror. When you did this, and it "stuck" in place, was there any kind of clipping sound or any indication that it was installed properly? Or just that it didn't move anymore?

After witnessing several broken windscreens at the dealer I worked at, I stopped tapping or 'drifting' the mirrors to remove and install. I use 2 pocket screw drivers and lever the mirrors off and on. To remove you just insert the screwdrivers into the slots in the mirror mount base pointing downward in a 'vee' (touch the tips together) and pull the screwdrivers down. The mirror will be levered off and no strain on the mount bonding to the windscreen. To install, you offer up the mirror to the windscreen mount with firm upward pressure, insert the screwdrivers in a 'vee' pointing up and catch the hollow area in the windscreen mount base. Lift up on the screwdrivers and the mirror will lever into place.

Good suggestion Motorcarman. Fortunately, my mirror did not need to be tapped very hard. A slight bump with my hand and it came right off.

@fidget247: No, I don't remember any click, just felt tighter. I wondered about the click too, but so far, it's stayed in place just fine. Good luck, and do heed Motorcarman's warning as I've heard about broken windshields also.

Thanks for all of the comments. I took the clip out and with pliers, make it more tight. The mirror slid up on the clip and is very stuck on there. Perfect. Thanks to all that helped with input.

Ohhh so there is a clip in there. I was wondering if it was just poor engineering... thanks for the info. I guess if the gasket maker i put in the slide rail doesnt add enough tension, ill find that clip.

Just went through this, yes the clip has 2 tabs/ears, one of mine was broken off. The clips are the same in XJ6s which I interchanged with. You will need a 20 or 25 Torx/star driver.

Note the left side here.

Here's the XJ6 clip.

Contact the guy whom runs the site linked below he had mine shipped to me in 3 days.
