Default 1999 XJ8 Help

Hi everyone, My car overheated yesterday, coolant leaked out. I shut the car down when I saw the temp guage go all the way up. I replaced the hose today and refilled the coolent. The car will not hold an idle and the "low coolant" light stays on. What should I look for and do?

Bummer. How long did it run overheated? The aluminum engine is pretty sensitive to an overheat condition. Also, which hose did you replace? If you still have a plastic thermostat housing, now is the time to replace it with the aluminum one. As for the "low coolant" message, that may come from a sticking coolant level sensor. Here are coolant refill instructions: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ng-baby-55930/
If you know for certain that the coolant level is good, try gently moving the "float" in the tank with a screwdriver. More information about the coolant tank and level sensor here: JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource

Are you getting a CEL or codes that might be related to the idle?

As soon as the guage went into the red I shut the car down. No codes are appearing. If I step on the gas slightly the car idles fine and the engine purrs. It just cannot hold an idle. Any more suggestions?

I'm just watching this thread and wondering if maybe, just maybe, disconnecting the battery for a minute and then re-connecting it would help. Remember to follow the proper procedure once you re-connect it. Before doing that, maybe someone who knows what they're talking about will pipe in and say I'm full of it. Just a thought.

I know you said that there aren't any codes showing. It would be helpful to know if there are any codes still stored in the system. There are a number of possibilities to cause your car not to hold idle. The first thing that comes to mind is a throttle body that needs cleaning. That's a fairly common issue on these cars. There could also be an issue with your TPS or MAF.

Disconnect the battery for a minute, and then reconnect it. Try to start the car, but DO NOT step on the gas pedal. The car should try to start but will not continue to run. Turn the key to the OFF position for a second, and then try to start the car again. DO NOT step on the gas pedal at any time. The air idle motor should now calibrate from your first attempt to start the car and the engine should idle on its own. Hope this works.

Hi
Your low coolant message could be that the sensor in the coolant reservoir tank is stuck.

Use a some kind of plastic spoon to stirup the coolant in the reservoir tank.

Sometimes the sensor is stuck and not floating the reservoir tank.

Also make sure you fill the reservoir tank almost to the top of the tank. Cooling system warning system is very sensitive to the coolant level.

Thank you all for your help. The check engine light went on and now I have two codes P0300 and P1316. I have not disconnected the battery as of yet. I looked in the manuel and it looks like it is pointing to a coil pack. Could this be a false reading or could I have burned out one of the coils. If so how do I tell which one?
