Advice on coil packs for XJ8
Hello,
I am new here and newish to jags (I have what I am pretty sure is a 1999 XJ8). Having got a tip or two from another thread here I am hopefully doing the right thing to get some help with an issue.
The history of my problem is as follows:
Restricted performance light came on and engine started throbbing a bit when idling (misfire)
I got a code reader and retrieved the code 'P0352 Ignition coil B primary/secondary circuit'
I switched the coil pack from that cylinder to another and the error followed it and became 'P0351 Ignition coil A primary/secondary circuit'
I don't know much about cars would be grateful for any advice on the following questions that have come into my head through all this:
1) Does my above detective work indicate that a replacement coil pack is the likely solution to the problem, or have I not got to the bottom of it?
2) There are a million different brands (https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/oem/xw9312029ab) is there a recommended one to get, or brands to avoid?
3) Will I get away with just changing the faulty one or do I need to do them all at once?
Any help with this would be great!
Thanks in advance

I'd say you've donethe right thing and yes want a replacement (but keep the old for ages just in case).
I didn't need one but bought a used one as a spare just in case (I know...). I hesitate to suggest that for you. I did it because at least it was the right make.
Mine are Denso IIRC but yours may not be - someone will chime in I hope.
I would only change one at a time. Better the devil you know. If you get a good one I'd later buy another (or a used, yeah that's me!) as a spare.

To get you started:
An indicated ignition coil failure does not necessarily mean that any of the ignition coils themselves are faulty, as it could just as well mean that the wiring to or the connector to the coil is faulty. Thus, step 1 is to check all the wiring and all the connectors to the ign.-coils. Check for damage and check for corrosion.
I am unsure, if a faulty spark-plug could also be the culprit, I recommend to remove the spark-plug to check and to clean them with a wire brush.
If you are going to buy new spark plugs, I'd recommend Denso Iridium TT. If you have the 3.2L or 4L (not the 4.2 or 5L) engine, that it should be Denso IQ20TT

You have done the right thing, if the problem follows the coil then you have found your fault.
Denso’s were OEM and are a very good make so I would, if you can stick with them.
The 308 I believe had 2pin and 4pin coils so do check you are getting the correct one.
Best bet is to phone S and G Barratt and give them you chassis number and they will give you the correct part.
Their site says they have them in stock but then gives an error when clicking on the part so best to phone.

Good luck!

Good luck!
I'd suggest Berkshire Jag Components for another decent parts supplier.
I had the exact troubles and all of this advice is spot-on. I wish I had it all in one place when I set out two years ago to fix misfires. Good luck. There is smooth driving at the end of this journey. Trust me!

As already mentioned, the original ignition coils were manufactured by Denso, which is the company that made the entire engine management system and all of the associated sensors. The original coils were made in Spain. The Denso coils currently available are made in China.
If you cannot find a Denso coil, companies that are OEMs to other automakers include Bosch, NTK, Bremi and Hitachi. I have not had good luck with brands other than those.
Cheers,
Don

Hello all
Thank you all for the replies, they have been very helpful.
My existing one is a Denso so I guess I will go for that from one of the suppliers recommended above.
At the risk of being boring I will post how I get on here in due course.
I haven't messed around under the bonnet for 20 years this is all quite fun!
