Default centre brake lamp or the "third brake light: one led out

There are a few leds in the third brake light ,but one is not working .

Do i have to replace the whole unit ,or can i put a new led/bulb in ?.

Any idea how to take it of the rear shelf ?.

Regards

I'm sure someone will chime in with JTIS pics, but here is what I know:
(I had to remove mine when I repaired my sub woofer.)

Lay a mirror on the package shelf under the brake light unit. Look from the top and you will see two square 1/2" retainers located on each side of the bottom side of the unit. Push in (up) on these and carefully remove the back portion of the light enclosure. I don't think they are LED's, just regular bulbs.

Be very careful when you do this, take your time and go slow or you will break something, don't ask me how I know......

They are NOT LEDs, they are 'peanut' bulbs and the bulb holder is probably melted and distorted.

Mine are, Bentley OEM. Junked that plastic failure for a decent high level break light.

Looks good!!!

Should last forever!!!

I have several LED high mounted stop lamp strips from different models so I will probably retrofit one to my 1999 XJ8L.

Agree with you Bob, mine was not LED, mine was just as you describe, melted and distorted, I bought a replacement unit off E-Bay for approx $20 (Bulb holder & reflectors only, almost new) complete with bulbs, one out, one in, easy and Cheap. Not even worth messing around with anything else. Replacing the bulbs alone, would probably have cost me more.

Tony,
You may want to post your question in the XK8 section. This is the XJ8 sub forum.
