centre brake lamp or the "third brake light: one led out

I'm sure someone will chime in with JTIS pics, but here is what I know:
(I had to remove mine when I repaired my sub woofer.)
Lay a mirror on the package shelf under the brake light unit. Look from the top and you will see two square 1/2" retainers located on each side of the bottom side of the unit. Push in (up) on these and carefully remove the back portion of the light enclosure. I don't think they are LED's, just regular bulbs.
Be very careful when you do this, take your time and go slow or you will break something, don't ask me how I know......

1999 XJ8 Third Brake light
Agree with you Bob, mine was not LED, mine was just as you describe, melted and distorted, I bought a replacement unit off E-Bay for approx $20 (Bulb holder & reflectors only, almost new) complete with bulbs, one out, one in, easy and Cheap. Not even worth messing around with anything else. Replacing the bulbs alone, would probably have cost me more.
