Default checking trans fluid

I have purchased a dipstick, but I am not sure how to check the fluid level. My Van is neutral gear, engine running. My other car is engine running, park gear. What is the XJR routine ??

Thanks, Jim

There are TEMP markings on the dipstick tool.
The procedure is 'Engine running, Park or Neutral'.

You can find them on E-bay - I purchased one for the Mercedes trans / XJR. I'm not sure if XJ8 uses same one. Hopefully someone will join in and supply that info.

I would add a few additional thoughts: In my experience COLD readings are less reliable than HOT readings, so it's a good idea to take the car for a good 20 minute drive before you park it on a level surface, hold your foot on the brake and move the gear shift lever through each gear and leave it long enough for the gear to fully engage, then return the lever to Park and check the fluid level on the dip stick. Being overfull can be as bad as being low, so you want the fluid level exactly on the HOT line. If you accidentally overfill it, you can use an inexpensive fluid transfer pump to remove the extra via the dipstick tube.

Cheers,

Don
