Default Chrome trim: Glue or adhesive tape?

The chrome trim underneath each window is peeling off as per attached image.

Should I carefully peel it all off and replace with some kind of double-sided tape or is a splash of superglue the answer?!

Would like to do this properly as it's happening beneath all the door windows to some extent.

If you are going to pull it off & remove all the old, I'd go w/ double sided 3M automotive trim tape or their tubed adhesive.

I have found on other vehicles that "Shoe Goo" works as good as any other adhesive in this application as well.

Superglue will turn the underlying gasket brittle & will have to be broken of ever removed again.

Default New gaskets possible? & Chrome trim pix

King Charles, thanks for that advice. I'll try to source the adhesive or even the shoe-goo then - great idea there.

I think that I might need to replace the rubber gasket on some of the doors too, but I guess that will be a scrap yard challenge more than anything? Guess it's pretty much impossible to get them new.

Have attached a few more pix too.

Default "Waist seal" for Chrome Trim = £239!

Managed to find the chrome "waist seal" new but it's £239!
At least I now know what it's really called for when I go to the scrap yard :=)

Yes good luck on that search I had the same mission in 2014 it was indeed arduous. Check w/ David that runs the site linked below, he has a plethora of hard to find parts.

Everyday XJ

Godspeed sir.

Are you sure they are glued --- or did the rubber degrade and allow the trim to come out?

I recently went thru this and the chrome strips are glued. The heat from the sun and weather degrades it over the years.
I gently pried and scraped mine free and then used Brakleen and a small wire brush to clean the mounting surfaces. I found at the local autozone a tube of trim adhesive. It is black and fairly thick. Using it I refastened the trim pressing on it for a few minutes to allow the sealant/adhesive to tack.
The waist seals unless they are damaged where they contact the window probably do not need replacement. It is kind of a misnomer in that they don't really seal anything. They do slow down the amount of water that gets inside the door. Water will get in and that's why there are drains in the bottom of the doors.

what you have is a common problem on a lot of cars.the rubber molding is encased aluminum that degrades with time due to saltwater mostly.you can replace by gently prying up molding but chances are your original will not go back on because it will be limp rubber due to degraded aluminum inside.when you pull replacements slowly pry up molding and watch closely for puffyness or white dust that moulding is no good.steve

GO to a proper car motor factors and ask them for the right glue or adhesive tape. Dont try and use epoxy resin on the car it will ruin the paint....
