Default coil questions

hello jaguar enthusiasts,

Can anyone help me with three coil related questions?

2002 XJ8 4 pin coil part # LNE1510AB (164 USD each from jaguar)

1 Is there a way to test These coils? (mass contradictory info on web)

2 Which coil is number 6, also known as "f" (Lots of conflicting info and images out there, dealer did not even know)

3 Is it "penny wise and pound foolish" to buy the cheap replacements? Any experience?

Thanks

Jeff xj8

2001 (silver) and 2002 (gold) xj8's

I have replaced 2 coils in mine both from autozone. Far cheaper than dealer. Others have purchased denso's on ebay and have good results.
Sitting in the vehicle looking at the engine. The left side is number 1 in front then 2, 3, and 4. The right side is 5 in the front and then 6,7, and 8.

Thank you, my attempt at posting the diagram didn't work too well.

I've done that, I asked a mod to delete it each time I did it...

Thanks for the quick responses.

High Horse, great song, makes me want to drive somewhere right now. Unfortunately both of my xj8's are out of service. Do you know the song, Red Barcheta? another great driving song. Thx for the link.

White xj8, mine is a 2002. How can I know which image to follow.

RJ273, the coil numbers don't correspond to the cylinder numbers in both images. The OBD also gave a designation of "F"

OBD codes were p0306, p1316 p0356, all related to number six.

I removed and tested all the coils and all have consistent OHM measurements.

Im gonna switch the coils right to left and install new plugs hope for the best and see if it generates more codes.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

The images posted by "2001 White XJ8" show that if your car is up to year 2002.5 (first 6 months of the year), you follow the left image; if later, the right image. Here's another image for cars up to 2002.5.

Thanks M. Stojanovic,.

Now I have to figure out my production month, Will that be on the door post sticker?

If changing the plugs and switching around the coils doesn't help, I guess my next suspect would be the ignition control modules?

Malaysia? Sounds exotic.

Easy - just read the engine number. It goes YY MM DD HH mm (mm is minutes) when the completed engine exited the assembly line.

And you can find your engine # on the left crankcase.

If you use a flashlight and view through the left front wheel-well you can see it behind and between the control arm and the steering knuckle.

I am STOKED !!!!!

With your help I figured out the cylinder / coil numbering system.

I put in new plugs, just because.

I switched the coils left side to right side. (Ohms identical all coils)

Tested it and..... restricted performance, ran worse and codes P0302 , P0352, multiple times.

Notice the pattern??? Coil six (the suspect) was moved to position two which is now throwing codes.

I took a coil from my other xj8 and installed it in number two spot.

Tested it and.....runs like new, no codes nor restricted performance. I am stoked.

Thanks for sharing your expertise and encouragement

Jeff xj8 Maryland USA.
