Good deal?
Have always loved jaguar cars, the way they look. I have never owned one and do not now but someone I know is selling a 1998 xjr with 150k miles on it. It needs a new fuel pump on it and I work at a parts store so can get a good deal on it. I also have a mechanic friend that will change it out for me for free if I get this car. They want $2000 for it, is this a good deal?? The car looks great, only has 2 small rips in the interior. One on driver seat and one on console. And the outside has a dent on top from hail. Other than that is is very good condition. Appreciate any answers I can get on this...thank you
You are assumming the only problem is the fuel pump, I guess. You will also need to change the secondary timing chain tensioners ( if they have not been changed ) to the metal gen III type. The parts are a couple hundred bucks and you can do it in a few hours if you know what you are doing.
The price is not a steal, but is in line with needing a $350-$400 fix. Does your frind know what a bitch it is to change the fuel pump on an XJ-8?

For me, I'd pay half that amount considering the mileage, potential gearbox issue in your future, timing chain upgrade required, it all adds up.
Easy way to fix your fuel pump is to take back seat out. Take rear deck cover out. Cut a hole from the rear sub hole. Make it like a "trap Door" if u will. Once it's cut u can access the fuel pump and change it out in an hour or 2 from start to finish. Once ur done the deck cover will hide your cut mark and u can laugh at the others that don't know ur the ****!!
2K would be my MAX price if the rest of the car was MINT. I mean MINT- no paint flaws, interior immaculate.
A no-start vehicle is very hard to sell.
It also might be cylinder wash- which will take less time and $$ to fix.

The real question is not if the car is worth $1K or 2K but rather can you afford to maintain a luxury car once you buy it?

Thank you all for the responses. My friend has changed fuel pumps and worked on several jags before. The car itself is in really good shape aside from 2 small tears. On of the console and one on one of the seats. Brand new tires are on it as well. Once the fuel pump is replaced I would consider the car to be in good condition. Even at fair condition the blue book value is 4300 according to kelley blue book. That is why I thought this may be a good deal. I still have not made up my mind yet but if this is something I do get and down the road it requires major repairs, I can park it for a while. This won't be my main driver. I have just for the longest time loved the look of these cars and always wanted to own one.
Do it.
The REAL value of this car not running is $1000-$1500 no matter what Kelly blue book says.
Look at it this way- I bought a car and the guys said "My wife overheated on the freeway"
I found a piece of a connecting rod poking through the crankcase when I removed it.
I pay according to worse case scenario, not best case scenario. Fortunately for me, I recovered what I paid in selling the headlights and wheels alone.
