I have a 1998 XJR. Message is reading Boot Open with red light on. I have frozen meat in the trunk. Have tried everything with the key and to manually open the trunk with the key. No go. Taking back seat out......hit the wall. HELP!!!!

Does the key turn all the way? Often times the key is used so seldom that the mechanism gets gunked up. Spray some cleaner, WD 40 or something I guess, and try to work the lock. It really should work.

There is a gas tank between the backseat and the trunk, that's not going to work unfortunately.

 

Thanks so much. Read about the gas tank. Wound up cutting a small hole behind the licence plate. The rod came off on the lock mechanism. Put the rod back in. Winding thin wire around it now to hold the rod in place. Will weld a small patch on. Only solution in the end.

No, not the valet key. I tried using the key fob + the key manually to no avail. Unfortunately it turned out that the rod came off the lock device. Cut a hole behind the rear licence plate. Have now wound a wire around the rod and mechanism to hold it in place. Put a thin piece of fibreglass over the hole (just in case the issue ever arises again I can break in easier than having to cut through a welded plate, especially if away from tools and electricity). Killed me to cut that hole, but in the end, it was the only way to solve the issue.
