Keep factory 6x9 "sub" or not?
It sounds bad. Well of course, it came out in two pieces. Did some research. And people mention rebuilding them. I'm not looking to do that. I do know it sounds ok when in good shape. Not really seeing any replacement dual voice coil 6x9s on the net. So should I just eliminate that rear sub and upgrade the door speakers and tweeters?
Or is there something that would fit in the 6x9 place, that is dual voice coil?
Also, I don't really want to put a subwoofer in the trunk.
Car is a 2002 xjr 100

I just went w/ ported(box) subs rear firing in the trunk, it flows through the old sub's spot in the rear deck superbly(the trunks in these have great acoustics). That OEM "sub" by today's standards is really lacking. I replaced all the door speakers w/ Rockford Fosgate P165 6.5" .
I tried removing the sub and keeping that hole open would just let through the whine of my (new denso unit!!!) fuel pump... I replaced it with one of these https://www.parts-express.com/tang-b...eaker--264-919 and an adapter. Now it's woefully underdriven by the factory amp, and I'm planning to install a small dedicated amp to drive it (or maybe a 5channel amp to replace the stock unit completely), one day...
If you want to drive adequate bass from the door speakers, you'll want to do some extra sound deadening and mount the speakers to the doors. One of the members here had that mod done (custom mounts built so the speakers are mounted to the door sheet metal, instead of the plastic door cards) and said it made a huge improvement. That's one more mod I'd like to do, if/when I get to replacing the door speakers.
EDIT: I did look for replacement 6x9 DVC subs that are shallow enough to mount in the stock location for a while... I think I only found one or two that were in the $200 price range if I remember right

I think those were the ones I saw back then. If the mounting depth isn't too deep they would probably work well. Sensitivity and impedance will affect how well they blend with the factory amp, as in how "loud" or efficient they are vs the oem sub.
Thanks for the tips guys. I think for now, I'll buy it some alpine type r's and just run those. I see a shallow 8 inch Kenwood sub on Crutchfield. When the money allows, I'll run a dedicated amp for the 8 inch sub.
The more I think about it, the more I think about upgrading the radio and amp. I know double dins are a pain in these cars. But I think this one will fit a little less fuss.
Thoughts?

I don't recall about replacing the radio, but once you start looking at replacing amp it can be a slipperty slope. I believe with new amp the whole car would need to be rewired. Someone with better memory can chine in on this.
I started at same place with my sub being blown, then looked at replacing amp, then door speakers, yada. In end it wasn't worth it as it quickly got to a point of fix or replace entire system. To me redoing the entire system, radio, amp, speakers, wiring, crossover and everything was more than i wanted. I ended up fixing the 6X9, once fixed I had more issues chasing rattles than sound it hit so hard. Eventually I replaced speakers with some new Alpine 6.5 with R tweeters. Somewhere on here i have a pic of old speakers compared to 20 year newer ones and it is amazing there is very little difference. The factory components even at 20 years old are pretty impressive. The upgraded tweeters did make a difference but almost made it sound too bright.

It is a slippery slope, LOL! Yeah my dad had a 98 xjr a while back. The stereo in it sounded great, even tho it was factory Harmon. But, I can't help myself. Just remembered my dad has an 01 xjr parts car. Which has a double din it. I'm sure that will help me in one way or another.
