is this bad? This poor car has been to auction a few times and it failed emissions with only 18k on it!?
I am starting to wonder if maybe this car was a bad idea.
What do you think?

I seem to have a bunch of lil things that are worring me, but no solid problem as of yet.
Itried to contact the dealer that was maintaining the vehicle to get a list of things recently ddone so I could continue with the care for this vehicle, but they want me to bring it to them and show I am the owner before they will tell me anything (thats over 4 hours away so thats not happening)
A few of my worries include the coolant smell (only outside the car) which I've already addressed in a thread of my own, a slight ruff idle when at a stop(feels like its missing a bit but the RPMS stay steady) I almost hear a knock in the engine(I say almost because you really have to be looking for it) but it does not get louder or fast with higher RPM or on accelloration. Also there is a noise coming from what sounds like the engine compartment but you can only hear it when your in the vehicle(it almost sounds like a staticy radio station cutting in and out, with out any words or music obviously or maybe like a hissing water leak)I've been under the car under the hood and can't hear it outside the vehile.
I'm just worried because I should have picked up something a lil less fancy and expensive and can't afford for this car to be down.
one last thing, I read that these cars should take dex Cool and mine has green coolant in it, should I flush it or is 98 4.0 ok with the green stuff?

Most coolant I purchase (Walmart, Pep Boys, Auto Zone) is safe to mix w/ all types and colors of coolant. If you're in doubt, have the system flushed and re-filled the new stuff.

XJ, I see no reason why the coolant in the vehicle will not do its job at least until the next change time. However, I would not mix Dexcool with the green coolant. If you wish to go to Dexcool, flush the system good with distilled water before introducing the new coolant.

First auto auction could have been after the car was a rental car...they often go to auction when taken out of service. Second auction may have been due to the car having higher mileage, and dealer just couldn't move it on their sales lot. Could be lots of reasons. I was told if a jag or other luxury car has any paintwork on the body performed, it drops the car's value and goes directly to auction after the trade-in. Not sure if that is true or not, but could be.
My xk has similar 'noises', many of them are the air ventilation system our cars have. your xj and the xk share alot of the same mechanical parts as well. Get your coolant leak fixed, and try to relax for awhile. Plan for a few small problems/repairs a year, like any other used cars would have, and enjoy.

You all make alot of sense, I keep forgetting how old this car is because it is so nice and alot fancier than my others (06 HHR, 99 caravan, 65 Sedan DeVille)
I guess it has the right to make alittle noise hear and there doesn't it?
