Need help with exhaust options - 1999 XJR

Default Need help with exhaust options - 1999 XJR

So I've been reading through the previous posts on exhaust options and still not quite clear on what I should do. Late last year I brought it in and had a mid muffler delete and an X pipe in place(saw this suggested in a post on here), the guy at the shop suggested H pipe would sound deeper so I went for that. Spent like $400CAD and there was barely any noticeable difference in sound so I was disappointed.
I had a Magnaflow cat back on an old sports car of mine and loved that it was fairly quiet but really came to life under acceleration, so I guess I'm looking for something similar. I have a few custom exhaust shops near me so I've been tempted to just tell them what I'm looking for and hope for the best, but with my last experience and the fact I'm in Western Canada where old Jags are not that common I'm a little weary. So what do you suggest to give me something that kinda purrs at idle, bur roars when punching it?

My setup is "all stock" on both my Jags (the XJR and the V-12 VDP) but I have had some minor repair done by ABC muffler on 84 Avenue (they're a bit of pain to get to with the work going on with the train overpass on 50th). I think they do all of Sovereign's work and they weren't afraid to take the Series 3 in and put it up on the hoist. I think familiarity is big plus that the chains and small independents don't always have.

The best sounding exhaust on these cars is that the large single muffler gets removed and have an X pipe installed, remove the 2 center mufflers just in front of the differential and have those straight piped and leave the factory rearmost mufflers alone. Quiet at idle and muscular on wot.

The centre big muffler works as H pipe. Next two small ones works as drone dampners and the back boxes do the rest. Back boxes delete will definetly increase the sound level greatly. If you replace big muffler with a H pipe, delete the two small boxes and use absorb type muffler in the back. It will be loud and muscular as hell. But your ears will bleed with the drone. If possible I'd try the X pipe, 14" turbo style mufflers where two small ones used to be and 14" or bigger absorb type box in the back depending how loud you want. 14" will fit in the middle I've done that. This kind a custom pipe job is costly.

The place I got a custom exhaust done, fitted a new box at the front, removed the boxes in front of the rear axle & new back boxes. It drones like mad at low speed & is annoying as hell but they've been useless sorting it, so I'll eventually go elsewhere & get new centre boxes put in.

Turbostyle mufflers are excellent to kill drone. Those are flowthrough but you can not see through them because fumes flow three times back and front inside the muffler.
Dynomax SuperTurbo for example.

My current set up from front to rear order is X pipe in the middle , keeping the OEM mid mufflers at the Y shape split spots then powerhouse UK straight pipe at the end.

Perfect to me in balance of sound and performance. never run straight pipe all the way!

There could be multiple reasons to alter the stock exhaust system.
Personally....I kinda like it just the way it is.

Mr. Randy, brilliant. My personal favorite forum responses are those void of contribution to the topic. Really keeps me coming back (not really).

Mr. Legend, exhaust tuning and tailoring may feel discouraging, but it's not impossible. It may simply take more trial and error than you'd like to achieve what you're after. TEAMS of engineers design these things, so when you change this or that don't be surprised if it isn't just right the first go. Not a big deal to do some rework until you're content.

Hahaha...yeah and my favorite postings include those that spend tons of
money to alter splendid Jaguar engineering to suit a whim. However, it could
be that money is not an issue and denigrating quips are the norm.

I like this option personally.


My 01 XJR is fully stock. Love the sound and the pitch of the exhaust, just would like it a bit more of it. Swapping out the rear mufflers only for a pair of straight pipes is low effort and about as inexpensive as I think you're going to get.

Edit, they look like they just unbolt so I might pop mine off and see.

Mr. Randy, very well put. I'd hate to contribute to poor forum culture, for that I apologize (genuinely).

Jaguar engineering is splendid, that's why we enjoy these cars, however we shouldn't be tethered to it as it isn't always perfect.

Edit: Mayhem, thanks for sharing. The rear pipes do unbolt easily; release the clamp, then slide the assembly out of the rubber hanger at the rear.

I've seen stainless replacement backboxes that are just big bore pipes on ebay UK, They'd be a good option for that.
