Smile New Jaguar owner

New to the forum and the jaguar world..
I just bought a 2002 jaguar xj8, with only 47,000 miles, and had a few misc. questions;
Most importantly, i cant find a copy of a service manual..
Anyone know of a link or have an idea of what i'm due for?
Also, not looking to build "baby girl" at all but wouldn't mind having an aftermarket air intake, for whatever mpg improvement it might have.
Any other tips and tricks would be well appreciated.

Hello,
It sounds like you want to look up the X308 section as the X350 started in 04. The best info about Jags in the world is in here by the folks here. Take a look at the Intro section and send some info about you so we can get a feel of how you are and how we can benefit from the forum. Welcome to this new world of Jags!

Regards,
Ragman

Welcome to the forum. I've moved this thread to the X308 section, your 2002 model is an X308.

When you get a moment stop by our new members area and introduce yourself.

If you mean a manual for DIY, there are two options :

JTIS
Alldata DIY

JTIS is available on this website for download.

You can get the vehicle handbooks here :

Home | TOPIx

"for whatever mpg improvement it might have." That would be none at all, then.

1. Have the upper tensioners replace as soon as you can. Its a time bomb.

2. Replace transmission oil

3. Replace thermostat housing ans water pump.
I back out of a 2000 XJ8 with 45K miles located in Louisville, KY because of these two reasons.

I would not mess around with air intake. After market air intakes are just snake oil.

You can start with proper tires pressure and a good alignment job.

Welcome Ratgawd,
I am so thankful to the folks on this forum. I have gained a wealth of information from the experience and willingness of the members who share their expertise; and I’m sure you will too.

I’d like to add to Annamiata’s good suggestions.

1. “Have the upper tensioners replaced…” I might add that the original secondary tensioners were made of plastic. Jag went through three iterations before they got the bugs out of them. Your 2002 may have had the secondary tensioners already replaced. As Annamiata states, the originals were “time bombs” ready to let loose at any time, and most likely destroying the engine. Check to see if your plastic secondary tensioners have been replaced with metal ones. If not, replace the tensioners post haste!

2. “Replace transmission oil.” Do a full fluid flush and replace the transmission filter as well.

Happy motoring in your new Jag!

So sorry for the typo, my Jaguar is actually a 2000*
Should have given that a better proof read!
Annamiata, This sounds very familiar...
The jaguar i purchased was listed on craigslist (originally saying 45k miles) and of course was actually a year 2000, did the one you see happen to be red?
Furthermore, does anyone have further advice on my tensioners?
I.e; A specific tensioner i should purchase, the best place to have the work done other than a dealership, and estimated cost?
I'm also going to be embarrassed to ask but where can i get a good look at the tensioners from under the hood?

Talking Tips

The secondary cam chain tensioners are under the valve covers. The first couple of generations had a plastic body. You need the ones with a metal (aluminum) body. It can be done with the zip tie method (do a search of this forum), or the conventional method with lock down tools, etc. This is something that is a must-do (if not done already). Even if you remove the valve covers you can't always see the crack in the plastic body of them. The thermostat housing is also plastic and should be replaced by the aluminum one. If you don't do your own work, this stuff can get expensive.
Here is a link on the cam chain tensioners -

Welcome, and good luck !

I did spent hours inspected the red 2000 xj8 that you bought. I think you got a good buy. The owner did replaced the plastic thermastat housing and upper radiator hose. The tires were original that had flat spots and created a havoc shake while driving. Other than than the car was in great condition. I hope u got it for $5500 or less. I ended up with a 2004 with less miles for about same price.

Enjoy

Wow small world...
Yea he did inform me that he replaced all tires and told me because the car would "shake" after it hit 45. Drives like a dream now.
He said after replacing the tires he wouldn't take anything less that $5,500:/
So with the thermostat housing being replaced would you say the next things are the upper tensioners and new transmission oil with new filter?
Furthermore, if i did not want to do the labor myself could you recommend a specialist near by? And if so how much do you think i could expect to spend?

I would suggest that you download some existing youtube videos and DIY print out from this forum "zip ties method/tensioners" and bring to a recommended local mechanic. That would give them an idea how long it would take and how much to charge.

There are also youtube videos showing how to replace transmission oil and filter. links below.

Unfortunately, I just deleted years of DIY files/trick of trade manuals from my computer last week since I just bought the X350 or i would email all to you.

I also get rid of the nice rear mirror that your red Jaguar needs.

Joann Fabric does have the perfect match head liner material. Redo the head liner is not a big deal. Remove the headliner involves folding the stiff back support piece to get it out from the interior. The rest is easy and just take patient.

Good luck and enjoy your $0.10 on a dollar Jaguar.

Welcome. If you browse this forum much like I did when I bought my 2000 model, you'll eventually also read some scary stories about the transmission A-drum being almost as much a time bomb as the tensioners. Do a search for "Sonnax" upgraded main pressure valve and there are a few threads detailing how to mitigate the risk of this dreaded failure. At less than 50K, your risk is probably still minimal. Just replace the transmission fluid and watch out for the early symptom of delayed engagement shifting from park into gear.

One more thing I'd suggest is to flush the brake fluid. Check the maintenance history and if there is no mention of the brake fluid having been changed recently, then get it done. Brake fluid is more time-critical than mileage and should be done every three years. I've lost count how many master cylinders and calipers I've thrown in the garbage because of internal corrosion; they were too far gone to rebuild.

A little preventative maintenance and you should be enjoying your Jaguar for many years to come. I wish mine had such low mileage. I'm really rather anxious about what I will get next since I don't like the styling/design of more modern sedans.

Thanks for the advice everyone, very much appreciated.
Annamiata, have you happen to ever completed a tensioner replacement or do you know someone local who has?
I would be willing to pay for the help so as to avoid paying the dealership and would rather take it to a place who is not familiar with the work.

i was not able to find any threads about "sonnax" upgraded main pressure valve oddly enough, do you have a link you could possibly provide?
Much appreciated.

I just finished replacing the secondary tensioners on my XJR. I bought the tensioners and valve cover gaskets from Christopher's. I used the zip tie method. Not a difficult repair. Just take your time and follow the many tutorials on this site. I did one side one weekend, and the other the next weekend.
