Default p1646 codes xjr

Got app1646, reset and it was back on the 2nd start up so I am guessing the 02 is shot. It says bank one up stream. Just want to clarify that is the pass side correct? Anybody do the upper on an xjr? Anything beyond the air tube need to come out?

Yes, upper right on LHD. I haven't done a XJR but did replace a XKR. Be careful you don't damage the egr tube, it's thin wall steel and very expensive. There may a heat shield in the way.

Bank one is on the right hand side of the engine bay if you're sitting in the car.

Default my o2...

Trevor, when I replaced the right upper O2 sensor on my 99 xjr it was tight but nothing else had to come out. The left (driver's) side looks a little tougher...

Cool. Thanks, just got back from horrible freight with a 02 sensor socket. Have two spares on the cats in the basement of a parts car so hopefully all goes smoothly as it is nice and warm 45 degrees today. Back to winter later in the week. Glad it is the pass side, driverside looks tough.

Pass side is simple (US model); left side, I left to an independent, too much stuff had to be removed.

Easy piezy. Old one came out pretty easy. The spare on the cold cat in the basement not so much but finally popped after some work. Seems the 97 xk used a different connector so i did have to solder in the one from the bad one. Reset the light and hopefully that does it and I save $100. Didn't have time to drive it too long, just pulled around the block and then restarted. No light back yet.

Well. Bad new. My quick easy and free fix didnt work. I used a 97 o2 sensor and spliced the proper connector in. Anybody know for sure if the sensor is the same or not? Also i doubt it would be on its own fuse but any idea what fuse it would be on. Also hiw do i check voltage and resistance on it. Thanks. Down a car as the xk is at the shop for a wheel bearing and some attention to the tranny. Of course This is the time of year i drive the a lot of miles. Hate to order a sensor at 150 and have it not solve the issue

The XKR has two sensors listed depending on date. The early version is the same as the XK8, so it's possible you have the wrong sensor.

It is an xk8 sensor that i have in there. Only vis dif was the brand name and the electrical connecter. They would be dif part numbers because of the connectors but it would strike me as odd to have them reading dif peramiters between the models. Thoughts?

That sounds logical. There was a resistance check that I used, but I can't recall whether it was from JTIS or a forum search. I'll try and find it.

I found a resistance for the sensor heater using a forum search. It said the heater wires are a black twisted pair with resistance 6-8 ohms.

Hi,
the AJ26 engines used four zirconium dioxide type oxygen sensors - as likely as the ones you bought from the 97 XK. But with the introduction of the AJ27 engines (as your '03 XJR has) Jaguar changed to a "universal" type oxygen sensors (see attachment). This could be the reason why you couldn't resolve your problem.

You da man. I owe you a beer next time your in PA or I'm in Germany. That plus I did measure 10+ volts from the positive leads encouraged me to order a new one from Amazon who actually was 20 cheaper than rock auto although I'm not a fan of Bosch stuff. Seems that is all that fails on my Brit cars. Go figure. Hopefully we will know if it solves it by Friday morning.

So the lesson is: use the right part?

Don't mean to be sarcastic, but really? Sorry, I am snowed in, so I am a bit pissy

Really? If you had a couple spares that looked the same and was there on a day that was 50 degrees when a new one was 3 days away when the weather was gonna be 23 you wouldn't try it (knowing you weren't pulling your TVR out of the garage this time of year)? LOL

Send that snow my way please! If I wanted to live in a place with cold rain winters I'd go back to North Carolina.
