Default Programming Tool Purchase?

2000 XJ8

I have a bad door control module. Repair shop wants $300 to program it.

I’ve been reading about SSD on this forum. I don’t know how much they are much less where to buy one.

Are they difficult to use to do things like programming control modules?

I used a Ross Tech on my Bentley and if you weren’t careful, you could brick your car!

Any suggestions, thoughts?

VCATS, VCATS, VCATS, VCATS, VCATS, VCATS, VCATS, VCATS, VCATS, VCATS!!!!!!!!!!

Look in the boot and find the label with the DDM or PDM # with the correct suffix.

Software is ALREADY configured to the module and the VCATS suffix IS the software ID.

A quick Google search using the keyword VCATS diagnostic tool didn’t turn up anything.

Is this a UK or EU tool?

The door module does not need to be programmed to the car. They either don’t know if it needs to be programmed or they’re trying to rip you off. Many times a fully charged battery and a hard reset fixes many electrical faults.

That’s interesting because they said that the module itself has a label on it that says “This module is programmable”. Why would a module that didn’t need to be programmed have that label?

I guess I’m have to go over there and see for myself.

Thanks!

If the door module is from another X308, it'll work on your car without programming. I would at least have a matching part number. The VCATS label in the trunk will have the P/N for the drivers door module (DDM) following a 3 digit suffix. In my experience for DM’s, as long as the P/N is the same it doesn’t matter if the suffix is different.

What is the actual problem you’re experiencing?

The rear passenger door window will not open it close AND the same door will not lock or unlock.

So what’s the significance of the XXX in the part. Does that mean I can buy any part that matches the first set of digits or must I buy one that ALSO has the XXX in the last threer?

This picture is of MY module.

You could try plugging and unplugging the door module a few times following a hard reset to see if it'll start working again. If you look closely at the male pins inside that module, you’ll see that the witness marks don’t go down all the way.

Thanks. I ordered a replacement just in case I couldn’t get mine to work. It looks like this…

A site search is worth a go.

You'd think google could manage that...

You don’t think I did that before I asked?

Why don’t you give it a go and see what you come up with.

It means "Vehicle Configuration And Test System"

I found this very simply using the forum search tool, so maybe a teaching opportunity!

The search option you want
The search option you want "Search this forum"
Enter what you want to look for, in this case VCATS

Everyone has their own unique talents. one of the great things about this forum
is that we share them willingly...no matter how they are accepted.

Randy,

With all due respect, telling a member to use the search tool in response to a specific question is not sharing anything of value. It’s a dismissive gesture.

Especially if one knows the answer and typing the answer takes the same effort as telling one to google it. Exceptions exist of course. Some questions, in every group belong to, have been asked and answered ad nauseum. If one gets tired of seeing the same question, ie.," How do I program my key fob”, then it’s just as easy to scroll by rather than tell a member to use google or the group search tool.

Just my opinion.
