Default Shifter locked in Park - Resolved

Okay shifter is locked in park on my 99 xj8. It will come out of park if I take the Allen plug out and put the key to release. It will shift to neutral and crank. I can drive it but the steering wheel keeps moving and u can hear a clicking like a relay making noise. The steering wheel will not tilt motor will not operate manually. My garage door openers don't work either. Hard reset didn't correct. What do I need to check??

I'm not sure about your model, but my 97XK8 had a similar issue, on the drivers side near the fuse box, I had a velocity sensor or something like that. there is a soft touch reset button on top, I had to reset mine and now my problem is gone, also check your fuses I had one blown.

i hope that helps, but I really have never worked on a xj8

Got any codes?

Sounds like your neutral switch is malfunctioning.

That would throw a P1797 code.

How old is your battery? Batteries on the way out are known to cause a lot of electrical issues, too.

I bet you have a blown fuse. I'm not sure which one as I have an XK8, but when it happened to my car the screen washers wouldnt work when the gear shift locked, they shared the same fuse on the XK8. I bet on yours the steering wheel tilt shares the same fuse as the lockout solenoid. Good Luck.

Yeah mine was the interior trunk lights, but it was listed as something different. I wish I had a good memory but I want to say it was a 15amp high power or multi power fuse....Dern, I cant remember anything...

Hi
About 6 weeks ago, I had the same problem with our 2001 XJ8 - I could not get the shifter out of park. 1st I thought that the brake light switch on the brake pedal might be the problem.

Then I also noticed that were a number of other things like the interior lights not coming on when I opened the driver's door and the garage door opener did not work. I also mentioned to my wife that there was something wrong with the windshield washers (since they were not working).

I opened our Jaguar Vehicle Care Handbook and looked at all of the listing of fuses in the various fusebox locations.

I noticed that fuse# 7 (15 amp fuse) in the rear left hand fusebox controlled "Body processor module (battery supply for solenoids, lamps and motors).

Sure enough it was that fuse that needed replacement.

Hey jimlombardi,

I've got the same issue with my 01 XJ8 X308, I have not been able to take it out of park for months without having to manually override it, the interior lights do not turn on when I open the doors, the steering wheel motors don't work, and the #7 fuse is the problem.

THE PROBLEM IS: when I replace the #7 15 amp fuse, even when I use a brand new fuse, immediately when I place the fuse in the fuse box it blows. Therefore, there is a short somewhere.

I have tried replacing the brake switch and doing a battery reset (by disconnecting the negative lead and putting it on the positive for about 30 sec) and still every time I attempt to put in a new fuse it immediately blows.

I have bought a new shift solenoid and I'm thinking that that might be the problem. Can someone help me out with this?

- Jim
